ReviewLinux.Com: Xandros 4 and Codeweavers Crossover Office

Overview:

Installing Microsoft's Word on Xandros 4 Home Edition - Premium with Codeweavers Crossover Office. Still using Word but want the security of Linux? Get Xandros 4 bundled with Codeweavers Crossover Office and all you problems will be solved.

Installing Microsoft's Word 2000 (tm) on Xandros 4 Home Edition - Premium with Codeweaver's CrossOver Office

Before I switched to Linux full time I was always having a dual boot system. When I needed to be in Windows(tm) to run my favorite Word Processor it was the usual save everything in Linux and reboot to Windows (tm) and bring up the Word Application. Probably everyone reading this review has done this or at least has had a dual boot system so they can go back into Windows (tm) and run their favorite apps.

Well Xandros for sometime has been teaming up with CodeWeaver's CrossOver Office that allows Xandros to run Windows (tm) applications while still running Linux. No need to reboot to Windows (tm) and start up some of your favorite apps. Codeweaver has a long list of tested applications and follow this link www.codeweavers.com to see what Windows(tm) products are compatible with CrossOver Office.

We are going to show you through screenshots and bieif descriptions just how easy it is to run CrossOver Office to install a version of Microsoft's Office 2000 (tm). We are only going to install Word (tm) for this review but other parts are able to be installed.

The above images are pretty straight forward as you start the CrossOver Office program from the menu. You are then given a list of alot of standard Windows(tm) apps that you may want to install on your Xandros Home Edition system

Once you tell CrossOver Office where to find your Microsoft (tm) appliaction the install process will start to begin with the usual Microsoft (tm) menuing system. Enter in your name and registration info just as if you were in Windows (tm)

In our review we choose only to install Microsoft's Word (tm) onto our Xandros 4 Home Edition - Premium. This process didnt take long at all.

Once the application has been installed CrossOver Office does a simulated reboot to add the program icons to the Xandros menuing system. With minutes we installed Microsoft's Word (tm) onto our system.

Conclusions:

Xandros is really bringing itself into the fore front of Linux Distributions by bundling key programs like CrossOver Office with it's Linux OS. Xandros's marketing team know that the easier it is for Windows (tm) users to still have a couple of apps to run in Linux the more their OS will become know as the true user friendly Linux OS.

If you have to run Windows (tm) apps in Linux then give Xandros and Crossover Office a try.
