ReviewLinux.Com: Take a Ride on Mandriva 2008 RC2 Express

On September 21 2007 Mandriva announced their release of Mandriva 2008 RC2. Here is what was mentioned at DistroWatch.Com:

"Mandriva Linux 2008 RC2 'Kepler' was released today. New features since the release of RC1 include the final release of GNOME 2.20, the inclusion of the new 8.41.7 version of ATI's proprietary driver in the non-free repository to support Radeon HD cards, significant kernel updates that improve support for certain ATA controllers and many audio chipsets, some new features in the urpmi and rpmdrake package management tools, and over 500 bug fixes since RC1."

Downloading the ISO DVD was not a problem as for me I have high speed cable. It averaged about 600K/sec and I had the image in no time. Boot up was not an issue and I was at the install screen no no time.. Now I do not quite remember, but I think it was almost a 4 or 5 click process to get to the first install menu and thats why I say "Express" in my article title. Picking the partition was easy as well as the type of desktop one would want to use. I chose KDE this time as last time I used GNOME.

The second screen I see upon entering the install process menu was a "Migration from Windows" heading. It kinda caught me off guard and I chuckled as with the 4 or 5 click install plus the migration from windows statement kinda brought me back to the days of Xandros where it was as many clicks to get a working Linux system plus they were always preaching the "Migration" theme. I have been using Ubuntu for 2+ years but I did use Xandros for about that long too.. Anyhow back to Mandriva!

Below you will see the screenshots that led up to the install process.

After the install we were give a few screens for our user preferences. Below more screenshots.

All in all the installation of Mandriva 2008 RC2 went smoothly. We may install the GNOME 2.20 Desktop at a later date to give it a go. We will be looking forward to the new Mandriva.
