ReviewLinux.Com: First Look openSUSE 10.3 i386 DVD

Overview:

openSUSE 10.3 was released today October 4, 2007 and I am going to take a First Look at this Linux OS. It's GNOME desktop is what I installed off the DVD and I have a few pictures plus a short flash video of the desktop.

ReviewLinux.Com: First Look openSUSE 10.3 i386 DVD

openSUSE 10.3 was released October 4 2007 and I decided to have a first look at their openSUSE 10.3 i386 DVD. The DVD has both KDE and GNOME and for this look I decided to install the GNOME Desktop. Downloading was extremely fast from opensuse.org. I had the iso in a matter of minutes. Here is what was mentioned at openSUSE.Org about the new releases:

"The openSUSE team is proud to announce the release of openSUSE 10.3. Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, the openSUSE project provides free, easy access to the world’s most usable Linux distribution, openSUSE. openSUSE is released regularly, is stable, secure, contains the latest free and open source software, and comes with several new technologies.

openSUSE 10.3 will be supported with security and other serious updates for a period of 2 years.

This version contains new beautiful green artwork, KDE 3.5.7 and parts of KDE 4, SUSE-polished GNOME 2.20, a GTK version of YaST, a new 1-click-install technology, MP3 support out-of-the-box, new and redesigned YaST modules, compiz and compiz fusion advances, virtualisation improvements, OpenOffice.org 2.3, Xfce 4.4.1, and much more!"

I liked the fact that the openSUSE team will be supporting their open source product for a term of 2 years. This means less full installs and a comfort of knowing that your distribution os will be up to date and secure for that amount of time.

The installation of openSUSE 10.3 i386 DVD started off with a beautiful splash screen of green and then the usual Linux questions that we all have become so fond of....

Below of some pics up to the install menu.

I am installing GNOME for this tour but openSUSE comes with many excellent software packages as well, to name a few; X.org 7.2, Gnome 2.20, KDE 3.5.7, glibc 2.6.1, OpenOffice 2.3 as well as Firefox 2.0, Thunderbird 2.0, Evolution 2.12, Xen 3.1 and many more. For the server minded it includes Apache 2.2.4, MySQL 5, DHCP, FTP and programing packages such as PHP 5.2.4 and GCC 4.2.

Installation wen perfectly onto my machine. I had no issues. Those who use openSUSE should be happy with the new release.
