Overview:

Xubuntu is a lightweight Linux OS based on Ubuntu. Version 7.10 is just around the corner and today at ReviewLinux.Com we are taking a quick look at the first release candidate of Xubuntu 7.10. Some images of the Xfce desktop as well as a short flash video of it in action.

ReviewLinux.Com: Xubuntu 7.10 RC

7.10 RC was released October 11 2007 so we thought we would have a quick look at it.  Xubuntu is a complete Linux operating system based on Ubuntu.  The main difference between Xubuntu and Ubuntu is the fact that Xubuntu is a little lighter on system requirements and it uses Xfce as it's desktop.  Xubuntu is perfect for that old computer just lying around in your basement.

The final releases of Xubuntu and Ubuntu are just a little over a week away but lets have a sneak peek at Xubuntu now.

Xubuntu is also a LiveCD so after booting you are taken into a LiveCD desktop.  We installed Xubuntu accepting all the defaults that were asked.  Installation did not take long and soon we had a working Xubuntu system running Xfce desktop.

I have installed a working Xubuntu system on a P2 300 Celeron 256 meg system.  I used a GeForce 4 64 meg Video card and the system was very fast and I would say that anyone only having that amount of hardware would find that doing email and browsing the web to be no problem at all.  Plus also running all the other apps included in the system.  One doesnt have to stick to what is just on the install CD.  You can install any software that sites in the Ubuntu software sites just as long as your hardware can handle it.

Visit the Xubuntu website for more details on this OS and take a look at the short flash video too.
