ReviewLinux.Com: Mandriva Linux 2008 Free First Look Well it is finally here as they were saying on the Mandriva Blog. Mandriva Linux 2008 Free has been released on October 9 2007. This release has been highly anticipated from the Linux community and I am happy to have a first look at this excellent OS. What was mentioned on blog: "The result of six months of heavy development and testing, 2008 includes all the latest software and many enhancements over previous Mandriva Linux releases. You will find KDE 3.5.7 and the new GNOME 2.20 already integrated, a solid kernel 2.6.22.9 with fair scheduling support, OpenOffice.org 2.2.1, cutting-edge 3D-accelerated desktop courtesy of Compiz Fusion 0.5.2, Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.6, and everything else you’ve come to expect from the latest Mandriva Linux release. We have integrated a reworked hardware detection sub-system, with support for a lot of new devices (particularly graphics cards, sound cards and wireless chips). Also, the addition of new features and ongoing improvements to the renowned Mandriva tools continues, including a wizard to import Windows documents and settings, the new network configuration center, and improvements to the Mandriva software management tools." Downloading the DVD ISO was fast as I hooked up to a France mirror and had the ISO in a couple of hours. I did a short tour of Mandriva 2008 RC2 several days ago and I do not expect to see too many changes in the look and feel of this os. This time I am installing the KDE version of the OS though so the look will be different from the previous review but still the same software packaging. KDE is much like the Windows(TM) look and feel and Windows(TM) users will probably pick up on it's interface more than GNOME. Mandriva even makes mention to the migration of Windows documents over to Mandriva Linux 2008 Free in their installation menus. You will see the image below. Below are a few images of the install process. 
 
  Installing Mandriva 2008 Free to my hard drive started off with no issues. I installed it on to a completely wiped out partition so choosing the defaults that Mandriva suggest is the easiest way to go. Users installing for first time on to a "Linux Only" clean wiped out partition will experience the same setup as I am going to do. Installing Linux on to a clean system is always the best for success but if you are doing a dual boot system there are plenty of resources on the web to help you with that setup. 
   Well I had a couple of issues when installing and not sure if others experienced it but once installed and rebooted I came upon a screen advertising Mandriva but with no way to escape from it. <grin> Seriously I was confused.. Well all I did was shutdown machine rebooted and went into another set of questions from Mandriva that I basically just declined to answer. Finally after all that, I was at the desktop. As expected everything I tested worked fine. Loaded up a few programs and they started without any issues. Short tour, short conclusion. Got it going!
