ReviewLinux.Com: gOS is worth looking into.... Today I took a look at the latest version of gOS. I think the "g" stands for "green" and not what all the internet thinks it means "google". Although gOS is built around alot of your favorite google apps this OS has much more behind just the fancy desktop and the word google. Built on Ubuntu 7.10, gOS is a light weight Linux open source operating system. In my test Virtualbox this OS was one of the fastest that I have tested. I would love to see this OS in the new ASUS EEE PC and as a matter of fact a buddy has purchased one of those little gadgets and I think I may be able to talk him into a test run of gOS. The installation process was a breeze. It installed in a matter of minutes and then it updated itself too connecting to the proper repos on the network. The desktop is nice. I enjoy the look of it as well as it functionality. Nice "Green" color too. gOS says that this OS is great for those slower systems which makes it a great canidate for an OS on that old computer sitting in the closet. Walmart bundles this OS with a C7 budget computer which I am try to get my hands on to review too. I tested the latest iso gos-live-1.0.1. This version is also a LiveCD so you are able to test before you install. Below are some screenshots.

![]() I like this os. As I mentioned it is fast. Nice looking and none of my tests failed. All software came up as expected without any surprises. As for software, it has everything you would expect in a Ubuntu system. It seems very solid. I do not personally use any google apps. I do not even have a gmail account. Can you believe that! There are a few souls left like me I guess. But heah the fancy bottom menu bar is very cool as you will see in my short flash video. The desktop is setup so that even your Grandma can navigate it ( Sorry Grandma ) Large nice icons pop out and up comes the application. I can see where the gOS team are going with this. KISS Keep it Simple Stupid comes to mind. If you are looking for a simple desktop that is clean and easy to understand, try gOS. Once you have mastered it you have the power of Ubuntu behind it to branch out into more things and apps. Check out my short flash video of gOS in action webmaster - http://www.reviewlinux.com |
