Post Fedora 8 due Nov 8, just weeks after opensuse 10.3, ubuntu 7.10

Even as new versions of opensuse and Ubuntu hit the web this month, a jazzed up Fedora 8 release is being prepped for availability on November 8.

Fedora 8, now in final testing, features an online desktop, a new look-and-feel called Infinity, IcedTea, an open source Java environment based on openJDK, and a preview of Compiz Fusion, an advanced graphics friendly Windowing system that was released in August. Fedora 8 Test 3 was made available Oct 4, as opensuse 10.3 became available.

Like opensuse 10.3, Fedora 8 incorporates the new GNOME 2.20 interface, featuring a new default theme for GNOME dubbed ‘Nodoka” developed by the fedora team.

Fedora 8, however, does not include the KDE 4 preview that is included in opensuse 10.3.

Fedora 8 also offers enhancements for BlueTooth, better laptop support and Pulse Audio sound server, and improved management features, For example, the update included system wide network manager integration, secure remote management for Xen, KVM and QEMA virtualization, a Policy Kit to ease administration and a new graphical firewall configuration tool, according to the release notes available at fedora.org.

The last version, Fedora 7, code named “Moonshine” was published on May 31. Red Hat sponsors the open source project.

Ubuntu is also preparing a 7.10 update that is expected for release in two weeks.
