Review – Mandriva Linux 2010 – Part 1/2

Mandriva Linux is a fine beginner Linux Distro and I think it combines a nice mix of reasonably cutting edge applications, stability and polish all together to make one brilliant Linux distribution. 1. @shamty94 No, use Windows.

  2. @noxified1 Mandriva. Ubuntu is crap.

  3. @OfficialKohieArts If that is the case then how comes so many Linux users don’t know how to run Windows properly.

  4. @DerekYeray Neither, use Windows if you want to just use your computer. But if you must use Linux then definitely go for Mandriva, it doesn’t have apt.

  5. DerekYeray says:

    hey dude, i have Win XP in my laptop, but i want to change to linux…. the mandriva linux sounds good, but i’m already downloaded the linux mint 11….so.. what would you recommend me?

  6. TheVista24 says:

    I use Ubuntu only because I have a netbook, XP is broken, and for the GUI. I think you just convinced me to use Mandriva.

  7. OfficialKohieArts says:

    @i7270 Linux is used world wide, Its advanced like its cousin Unix. BTW Mac Osx and Windows is only user friendly because people don’t know much about computing.

  8. Thank you for the review, I see now that I’ll stick with Linux Mint

  9. what to chose between mandriva 2010 free and ubuntu 11.04?(or 10.04lts)

  10. MrMatheuselias says:

    @shamty94 sure, but only under wine

  11. MrMatheuselias says:

    @Techsnap in truth, no. Mandriva is the OS resulting from the mix of conectiva and mandrake

  12. can we install Microsoft office software?

  13. @bb3360 yes it will ….. you will have two choices when you start the computer mandriva or windows 7 (or whatever version you installed first…. always windows first then any linux version) (just make sure you have enough space for it :) )

  14. @AnonX1911 Well all your info from you hard drive and from you windows still be there when you put in mandriva

  15. Who uses Mandriva.???Please help me ..
    I need information about Companies or Organizations that use Mandriva..

    Please heeeeeeeeeeeelllp!!!!!!!!!!!! or else i lose my job.. ROFL!!! LOL!! LMAO!

  16. Mandrake was a better name… Mandriva is weird.

  17. @suisel yes you can…. you can run all the linux versions and windows as long you have windows first installed and then install linux (Ubuntu, fedora or what ever)…. if you install linux and then windows you will kill linux because windows is not friendly. windows first then linux….

  18. ANGERINSIDE says:

    @edcoondog I would say Fedora 13 is really good I installed it on my Sony Vaio laptop after putting a new HDD on it and it works wonders its really good.

  19. @MalpaPL
    open-source doesn’t always mean that you don’t have to pay for it :)

  20. is there a version that’s better suited to a laptop? I was gonna do mandriva this week and check it out. figured i’d just throw in my new hard drive and put linux on it instead of my pain in the ass Vista

  21. lindsaymobil22 says:

    @MalpaPL Many linux distros have a version you pay for, if you dont want to pay for mandriva use the One or free version, not powerpack. RedHat, SLED, and distrobutions like that require paying for due to support and other stuff

  22. worst distro… pay for linux? gtfo

  23. “BRILLIANT job” silly brits xD

  24. stancugenius says:

    what are the specifications on your pc ?
    i mean … is mandriva THAT laggy or is it your pc …
    i have used live cds and they are faster than THAT

  25. I run Mandriva on my Acer laptop and I really like it a lot so far,

  26. @CristyS89 I don’t like it either

  27. mysteryloser24 says:

    I think Ubuntu’s fairly safe for now… xD But it does look good. :) In fact, the first ever distro I tried to install was Mandriva 2009. :) I say “tried” because it failed, and I gave up. xD Ah, such a Windows user I was… “Was” being the operative word there. ^^ But seriously, 1.6GB and MPM isn’t even included by default? Not for the user who doesn’t like weighty yet empty systems… :s

  28. Linux4UnMe says:

    @apnesh552
    you may have to get it from Packman… just google “Opensuse 12.1 guvcview” and you will find the rpms

  29. how you install guvc view on every distro, how can i install it on opensuse 12.1

  30. guzfin1234 says:

    @Linux4UnMe
    Although I did have a hell of a time on the install! Kept getting update errors (prob because I pointed at a U.S. mirror) and got a list of kernel updates that was useless! Ugh! Went right back to Mint 11. Checking out Debian KDE right now though. Too many choices!

  31. Linux4UnMe says:

    @guzfin1234
    nice. enjoy :D
    hmmm maybe i need to set my mouse scroll wheel settings…. never had to before ;)

  32. guzfin1234 says:

    Haven’t installed yet but the Live CD seems promising. I’ve gone from Ubuntu(Unity arrgghh) to suse to Mint and now possibly Mandriva. It does have a hellafied Gnome 3 remix feel to it but seems livable. Nice review. Although I didn’t have any slow scrolling at all using the live disk. Thanks!

  33. MrDemilord says:

    I dont find it handy they removed the menu bar.. I have to take 3 actions instead of 2… :

  34. oh god looks :

  35. @jordanlang2
    cheers
    I use ffmpeg watch?v=0zkbAjOtW6E
    cool. goodluck!

  36. jordanlang2 says:

    Awesome! Subbed! What did you use to record? I think im going to install this tonight(:

  37. @MrGizmo757
    first thing I would do is download another iso, do a md5sum check on it and burn it at 4x speed and see if you have the same problem…. also make sure you use a good brand cd/dvd disc. It is a pretty obvious thing to do… if you have already done all that then what graphics card do you have? cheers.

  38. i can’t get Mandriva to work properly. its constantly freezing up. Mostly at boot. which sucks because i love the way Mandriva looks. i have only tried 64 bit. maybe 32 bit is more stable. you think?

  39. Linux4UnMe says:

    @brobriobri
    thanx mate
    Yeah the menu is Unity/Gnome3 ish…. I found it a little bit buggy… it’s ok… but i’de probably prefer a normal kickoff menu until they fix it up

  40. brobriobri says:

    Excellent review! Just received an auto email from Mandriva - pushing their Powerpoint 2011, and wanted to check out how far along Mandriva has come since the days I use to use it (2006?). This video was quite informative. By the way, that ‘menu overlay’ (kaddy?) reminds me much of Ubuntu’s new one with the Unity shell. Don’t quite know if I like it much, but I think I’m feeling that way because of it being different, and not really because there’s anything necessarily wrong with it. Good job!

  41. Linux4UnMe says:

    @badabumbadabing1
    I do listen to Cyprus Hill among lot’s of other artists/genres :P

  42. badabumbadabing1 says:

    ditch eminem and listen to some cypress hill bro

  43. Ok, will do thanks man.

  44. Linux4UnMe says:

    @Toyreon1
    if i was you i’de wait for LinuxMint 12. should be out in a couple weeks or so. And it WILL rock ;)

  45. IDK migrating from PC so I guess which one will make me feel more at home, but I guess KDE is a similar layout to a PC anyway, which one do you use?

  46. Linux4UnMe says:

    @Toyreon1
    define “better” ? :)
    Kubuntu is easier to use, Mandriva is harder, but less buggy imo

  47. Is this Mandriva better than Kubuntu? Im trying to see which 1 to install. Thanks

  48. Linux4UnMe says:

    @CristyS89
    haha nar, I guess I didn’t set up the clock properly :)

  49. Oh man, you did this at 5:00 a.m.?

  50. Linux4UnMe says:

    @Ograws
    you “should” be able to go into the package manager and remove it…. you can view your installed apps and uninstall/remove
