Review: Ubuntu 12.10

The 12.10 release does offer many convenient little tweaks, but users should have no real need to upgrade unless they would like to experience the new web apps feature.

Ubuntu 12.10 Installation And Support

The Ubuntu team has ultimately chosen to revamp the installation media for the Ubuntu distribution. The CD, DVD, and alternate image have all been removed in favor of a single new updated DVD ISO download. Thankfully this versions will work on USB leaving some flexibility. This download is expected to be 800MB, hopefully it does not continue to grow too fast.

UEFI Secure Boot Support

The 12.10 release is the first to incorporate support for the new UEFI Secure Boot protocol. This was done to improve compatibility for some newly available hardware. This change will help users attempting to dual boot Windows 8.

Ubuntu 12.10 Unity Desktop Changes

The Unity desktop has received much attention again for the 12.10 release. Here you can see a few of the many impressive features that we have all been waiting for. The dash has received many small tweaks and improvements that should not be ignored. Additional lenses have been added to the dash for even more convenience.

Control The Launcher

The Unity launcher is now more flexible. Users now have far more control over the items seen in the launcher. A larger number of items are freely movable inside the dash, more items can even be completely removed.

Unity 2D Removed

The 2D version of the Unity desktop has now been removed. Users lacking graphical acceleration should still be able to use Unity due to the llvmpipe driver.

Additional Unity Lenses

Users will also notice new lenses inside the Unity dash. These lenses include one for photos, one for Gwibber messages, and one for shopping suggestions. The Gwibber lens will allow users to search through Facebook, or Twitter messages directly from the dash. Unfortunately results from Amazon will appear when you are searching the home lense which can be mildly frustrating, especially for users with minimal screen sizes.

New Dash Previews

A new preview feature has been added to the Unity dash for the 12.10 release. The new preview feature will display relevant information about items appearing inside the Untiy dash. This feature can be seen clearly when viewing applications, music, or photos. You can preview items inside the dash with a single right-click. Users can then choose to launch, or install the previewed application. The un-install button that appeared in the previews window for the beta version has been removed so users will no longer accidentally un-install needed items.
