Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 announced

Galaxy Tab 3 10.1

The 10-inch form factor returns, but the top-end Tab 3 is still a mid-range device

Samsung’s second Tab announcement today brings news of the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, which as you may have guessed is a 10.1-inch version of the Galaxy Tab 3 line. Spec-wise, there’s not much to separate the Tab 3 10.1 from the 8-inch variant announced alongside it. You’ve got a 1.6GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM (less than the 8-incher, oddly), 16 or 32GB of storage backed up by microSD expandability.

It’s also running the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean along with the most recent iteration of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. And you’ve got Wifi, 3G and 4G LTE connectivity options available, as well as Bluetooth 4.0.

Disappointingly, Samsung has opted to stick with a 1280×800 display resolution on the 10-inch Tab 3, meaning you’ve got the same pixel count as the Tab 3 8.0, only spread over a much larger area. So we’re dealing with a mid-range Android tablet here, and Samsung will likely choose to compete on price rather than specs when the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 reaches British shores later this year. There’s no word of any official release date or price just yet, however.

Check past the break for more images and the official spec sheet.

Ubuntu 13.10 Codename Announced: Saucy Salamander

Saucy Salamander

Mark Shuttleworth has announced the codename for the upcoming Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander:

[...] I usually spend a few weekend afternoons doodling with a dictionary (it’s actually quite a blast, and I recently had the pleasure of actually knowing what some ponce was talking about when they described something as ‘rugose’).

So today I find myself somewhat short in the naming department, which is to say, I have a name, but not the soliloquy that usually goes with it!

Which is why, upon not very deep reflection, I would like to introduce you to our mascot for the next six months, the saucy salamander.

The development codename of an Ubuntu release takes the form “Adjective Animal”. Initially these weren’t in alphabetic order – until Dapper DRAKE (6.06).

Up next: Ubuntu 14.04 T T. Will it be Terrific Tiger? Or maybe Tenacious T-Rex? We’ll find out in 6 months. For a list of codenames used in previous Ubuntu versions and upcoming release suggestions, see THIS page.

HTC One announced for China with dual-SIM and microSD support

Android Central

A removable back cover houses the extra goodies, but the battery still remains untouchable

The HTC One is steadily making its way into hands around the world, and the next big launch announcement is for China. The HTC One has been announced for all China's main carriers, but comes slightly customized for the region from its international counterpart.

Beneath a removable rear cover, the Chinese HTC One houses slots for dual-SIM cards, and for a microSD card to expand the total storage. The battery still remains non-removable however, as it sits in the middle of the device still as on the international variants.

No carrier subsidized prices have been announced at present, but the One is set to go on sale direct from HTC on Friday, April 26.

Feedly sees 500,000 new users since Google Reader closure announced

Android Central

The news that Google Reader is to be closed down for good later this year has hit a lot of us really hard. For many it's the go-to way of getting their daily news fix, and for others — including everyone on staff here — it's an integral tool to help us get through the working day. There will be alternatives, but we will miss Google Reader.

One such alternative is Feedly, and the team has announced a huge influx of new users. In the first 48 hours since the announcement by Google, Feedly has seen 500,000 new Google Reader users join their ranks. Not bad numbers, considering the service is supposed to be in decline. Feedly also has clients for iOS, Chrome, Safari and Firefox, so it's got a big chunk of the bases covered. The reason behind the influx is most likely the fact that Feedly is developing their own system to transition Google Reader users over seamlessly when turn off day finally arrives.

Feedly has also announced how they're coping with the increased user base, including massively increasing their bandwidth and adding new servers. And, if you're all about function and less about fashion, the Feedly team has also written up some sweet tips on how to make it less pretty and more functional. Great stuff.

Infobar A02 announced on KDDI in Japan with interesting UI and design

Android Central

Japan is well-known for its seriously interesting mobile products, and the Infobar A02 on KDDI doesn't disappoint on design or creativity in the least. The Infobar series has traditionally been a design-leading line, and the A02 follows along with a striking thin unibody design in red, white and blue varieties. The design continues onto the interface, which is built on Android 4.1 — although you wouldn't know it by looking at the homescreen. Closer to the paradigm of Windows Phone, the Inforbar uses a tiled interface comprised of smaller app tiles and larger widget tiles, in a vertical scrolling list.

This handset is actually manufactured by HTC, and has some top-notch specs on the inside. We're looking at a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 16GB of (expandable) storage, 1GB of RAM, 720×1280 TFT display, 2100mAh battery and of course LTE. Like many high-end Japanese handsets, the Infobar A02 is also waterproof and dustproof, and includes NFC for mobile payments as well as a 1seg TV antenna.

This is quite an interesting handset on all fronts, and worth a look at some of the materials on KDDI's product page for the phone. If you're interested, head to the source link and check out the galleries, especially the pictures showing the lineage of Infobar design for the last 10 years.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z Could Be Announced on January 22 in Japan

xperia-tabletz-leak

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z isn’t a mystery to us anymore. We briefly learnt of the alleged new Sony tablet a couple of days ago and were instantly impressed and surprised at the same time. Sony has never been too much of a player in the tablet arena as history is evidence. But the Xperia Tablet Z seemed to be promising as it was believed to pack a gorgeous display and a unique set of features like the rumored IP55 and IP57 certification for being dust and water proof. And now, we’re learning that the device could be unveiled in Japan as early as next week. There’s hardly anything to go with here except for a website that indicated the tablet’s presence, which has been taken down now. The website which leaked out the info belongs to Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo. The carrier has been rumored to be the bearer of the tablet in the country and it suggested that users will be able to check out the tablet themselves in NTT DoCoMo retail outlets in Japan from January 23 to January 27. The tablet apparently will see an announcement in Japan on January 22.

What makes the info more believable is the taking down of the website which revealed the info, so we’re fairly certain Sony is cooking up something special for its home turf. Unwired View suggests that this early announcement could only be for Japan and that the world market could see the tablet being announced at next month’s MWC event in Barcelona, which makes complete sense as manufacturers usually tend to be more favorable towards their home country, which is the case with Huawei in China. If you understand Japanese, the image above should be pretty self-explanatory. And even if you don’t you can probably read the last few lines of the image where the word Xperia Tablet Z is clearly mentioned, which reaffirms the report’s authenticity.

We’re guessing most of the features which were revealed in the previous leak will be retained in the final version, but there’s a possibility of Sony changing the specs a little. As of now, we know that the Xperia Tablet Z packs a 10.1-inch Full HD LCD with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro chip is believed to be running the tablet which will be accompanied by 2GB of RAM and probably 16/32GB storage variants. The tablet is also rumored to sport a 6,000 mAh battery pack. In the camera department, the Xperia Tablet Z apparently packs an 8MP rear camera with all the Sony goodies bundled in as well as a 2MP front facing camera for self portraits. Let’s hope this Sony tablet sees the light of the day as the market is currently crowded with budget tablets all over and this could certainly make a decent addition to the list.
