BlackBerry, Nokia, Apple could be hurt by flood of ‘good enough’ Android phones

Android Cheap Handset Analysis
While strong early sales for the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One have been making news lately, the real story for Android may be how well it does with lower-cost handsets in emerging markets. Barron’s points us to a new note from Nomura Equity Research analyst Stuart Jeffrey, who thinks that many consumers in emerging markets will start upgrading to smartphones primarily because of “the increasing affordability and improved distribution of ‘good enough’ Android phones.” But Jeffrey thinks that what’s good for Android vendors is likely bad for non-Android vendors and notes that Nokia could find the emerging market transition from feature phones to smartphones particularly challenging.

Apple Supplier Pegatron to hire more workers, Fuels Speculation About A Cheaper iPhone

iphone

A few weeks back, there was a rumor that Apple will be producing a low cost iPhone next year mainly for its low income Smartphone users.  Now rumors are rampant about an Apple supplier called Pegatron and its plan to increase the number of workers employees in China. This increase will be massive; there will be about 40% more workers in the second half of the year.

One thing is for sure that Apple is planning to launch something new.And what is expected is that it will probably be focusing on producing a low cost iPhone basically for the Chinese and Indian markets.

Many experts believe that production of a low cost iPhone will affect the revenues from iPhone 5 negatively but still, Apple might be able to increase their market share by selling large amounts of the new cheaper iPhones.

Although we are sure of the exact date as to when this iPhone would be launched but we expect it to be released by the 3rd quarter.

How this phone will affect the revenues of Apple

This version of iPhone will enable Apple to compete with other Android phones in similar price ranges. We will have to wait and see to learn how this phone will affect the revenues of Apple, which have taken a significant drop over the last couple of years, mainly because of the decrease in demand of the iPad mini.

Whereas some people like Katy Huberty expect a massive increase in Apple’s revenues others believe that it will not have any significant effect.

Insiders fear Apple may not debut iOS 7 on time

Apple iOS 7 Delay
Apple is expected to announce the next version of its iOS operating system at its Worldwide Developers Conference later next month. According to a report from Bloomberg, design chief Jonathan Ive is “shunning realistic images” and bringing more “dramatic changes” to the email and calendar applications in iOS 7. The executive is reportedly encouraging collaboration between the software and hardware divisions, which is a different approach than his predecessors Steve Jobs and Scott Forstall. He is said to be “methodically reviewing” new designs in an attempt to avoid another controversial launch, as was the case with last year’s release of Apple Maps. There are some concerns, however, that iOS 7 may not be ready to be previewed at WWDC in June. The company is said to be so far behind schedule that it has members of its Mac team helping out in the mobile software division.

EFF ranks Apple worse than Facebook when it comes to protecting your data

Apple Data Protection
When it comes to privacy and data protection, Facebook is hardly thought of as a leader among big technology companies. It should be somewhat troubling, then, that the Electronic Frontier Foundation has ranked Apple worse than companies like Facebook, Amazon and Comcast when it comes to protecting your data from the government.

Third Quarter Apple Market Share Could Drop Unless Another Smartphone Is Released

apple eaten

The global Apple market share on smartphones is in danger of dropping in the third quarter of 2013. The forecast came from Toni Sacconaghi, a known analyst from the Sanford Bernstein firm. He predicted that the company’s slice in the worldwide market for smartphones may hit a rate of only less than 10% for the third quarter.

The Solution

However, the analyst said that the event can be thwarted if a new smartphone is introduced by then. Another solution for the impending loss in global shares is by introducing a new smartphone that is more affordable than its current product.

The Reason Behind the Apple World Market Share Forecast

Sacconaghi has a good premise for his assumption if the series of statistical data from the past up to the present are to be considered. He explained that while the Cupertino-based company reported a growth of more or less 7% per year, the smartphone market has increased by 36%. Thus, if the figures are to be analyzed, he said that the share of the company in the world market actually deceased year-on-year by 23% down to 17%.

Due to the speed of growth of the smartphone market and the inactivity of Apple in terms of sales prior to an introduction of a new hardware, the Bernstein analyst stated that Apple’s share will surely go down by 10% or even to a single digit.

The iPhone 5S

While the iPhone 5S is slated to go out this year, there is no definite period for its release yet. According to the source, the announcement of the new iPhone may be in September this year but it may not go out in the market until October. So, if Sacconaghi’s prediction is to be relied on, that could present a plunge in the third quarter global Apple market share for sure.

Apple and Samsung head back to court in November

Apple Samsung Damages Court
Judge Lucy Koh on Monday set a new trial date to determine the proper damages due to Apple in its ongoing patent battle with Samsung, Reuters reported. Koh determined that a new trial was needed because the jury had incorrectly calculated part of the damages. Apple was originally awarded $ 1.05 billion, however the federal judge slashed the amount by more than 40% to $ 450.5 million in March. The final ruling will likely see that award adjusted again, however. Koh ruled that Samsung and Apple will not be permitted to seek additional damages based on new sales data, products or theories, and the trial is must focus around the 13 Samsung devices that were found to infringe Apple’s technology in the original trial. The two companies are now set to face off in court beginning on November 12th.

Watch out, drivers: Apple plans to integrate Siri and Maps more deeply into cars with iOS 7

Apple iOS Maps Car Integration
Apple had better hope that its investments in iOS Maps yield some major improvements if it hopes to push its much-maligned mapping application into more automobiles. Unnamed sources tell 9to5Mac that Apple “plans to move aggressively into the in-car integration space later this year” and “is working with car makers to deeply embed iOS’s Maps and Siri services into cars.” Essentially, Apple wants to give drivers the ability to plug their iPhones into their cars and have them deliver turn-by-turn directions through a combination of Siri and iOS Maps, thus giving users a safer hands-free navigation option. All of which sounds good until you remember that Apple’s mapping application still has major issues, and it has even been blamed for stranding tourists in the Australian outback after they followed a set of faulty iOS Maps directions.

Apple iCloud Milestone, the Service Now has 300 Million Users

icloud for mac

This week marks an Apple iCloud milestone because the service has now reached 300 million users. It should be noted that the Cupertino-based company’s cloud storage service saw a drastic growth since its inception in October 2011.

From October 2011 to July 2012 alone, its number of users bubbled up to 150 million. Then, just six months after, the number of users for Apple iCloud increased by 100 million, making the total number of users 250 million. Basing from that period to the present month, another 50 million added up.

The news broke out after Peter Oppenheimer, the chief financial officer of the company, revealed the figures during its earnings conference call. It was also the time when the figures about the Apple profit for the last fiscal quarter came into light.

About the Service

The iCloud is around 1 and a half years old now. The service provides ways for iOS users to store and sync information in their device ranging from calendar data, emails, pictures and other files. So far, it was listed by various analysts as one of the top cloud storage service provider in the U.S. due to the huge number of its users.

Controversies

The Apple iCloud was not without controversies though during the course of its operation. One of them was being a subject in a lawsuit in the Arizona court on 2011 because of its alleged patent infringement. Another was the censorship issue that came out after users found out that it filters some phrases like “barely legal teen”. There was also the complaint about the storage and limiting its features to iOS users only.

Amazon is reportedly developing an Apple TV rival

Amazon is reportedly developing an Apple TV rival
Amazon is getting ready to make its biggest push yet into consumers’ living rooms. Unnamed sources have told Bloomberg Businessweek that Amazon is planning to release a set-top box that “will plug into TVs and give users access to Amazon’s expanding video offerings” including “its a la carte Video on Demand store, which features newer films and TV shows, and its Instant Video service, which is free for subscribers to the Amazon Prime two-day shipping package.” Businessweek’s sources say that Amazon is building its own dedicated set-top box to draw more traffic to its own content offerings since Amazon is just one of many video streaming apps available on consoles such as the Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation. However, Businessweek’s sources say that the set-top box will “likely” offer access to competing streaming apps such as Netflix and Hulu even though it will be primarily centered around Amazon’s video services.
