HTC monthly unaudited revenue up in April

HTC, money

HTC One sales fuel monthly revenue of $ 660m

HTC has announced its unaudited revenue figures for April 2013, revealing that it brought in NT$ 19.6bn ($ 660m) last month. This makes April HTC’s best month of 2013 so far, with revenue up from the NT$ 15.86bn ($ 540m) it made in March. However it’s still a significant fall from the NT$ 30bn ($ 1.2bn) it brought in during the same month last year.

The higher revenues are likely fuelled by early sales of the new HTC One, although we should note that much of the world — including the crucial U.S. market — had yet to see the handset until late April.

HTC will be relying on sales of the One to push it towards projected Q2 2013 revenue of NT$ 70 billion ($ 2.73 billion). The company recently announced its Q1 2013 financial results, showing its worst ever quarterly earnings. It’ll be hoping that today’s numbers are the first signs of a Q2 turnaround.

HTC revenue dives again in April, but One shows signs of life

HTC Revenue April 2013
HTC on Monday reported its revenue performance for the month of April, which continued the company’s downward trend as it struggles against rivals Samsung and Apple. HTC’s sales totaled NT$ 19.6 billion in April 2013, or roughly $ 645 million, and cumulative sales for the first four months of 2013 have now reached NT$ 62.4 billion. April’s performance was down 37% from April 2012, when HTC reported sales totaling NT$ 31 billion. HTC also saw cumulative revenue reach NT$ 99 billion by the end of April last year. While the company’s April 2012 sales continued a downward trend that has some industry watchers questioning whether or not HTC should begin hunting for a new CEO, there is one positive sign: As the HTC One began to roll out around the world in April, HTC’s revenue was up 26% over March.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Launch Delayed in T-Mobile and Sprint Retail Stores, US Cellular Gets it on April 30

Don’t look now, but Samsung appears to be in a little bit of trouble. Specifically, Galaxy S4’s US launch is not going down as smoothly as planned, with yet another delay crippling its availability on T-Mobile, the nation’s leading “Uncarrier”.

T-Mo has already had to push back the S4’s online availability with around five days, but now the retail store release is all messed up too. Initially slated to hit brick and mortar locations on May 1, the “next big thing” will only go on sale on May 8 in “select stores” and a week later in all stores.

Samsung Galaxy S4

And if five days might not be that big of a deal even for hardcore Samsung fans, two weeks is a lot to wait for a phone that’s set to start shipping from other carriers later today. Then again, we’re hearing Sprint will have trouble sticking to the original launch timeline as well, due “to unexpected inventory challenges from Samsung”.

Still, Sprint officials are confident they will fulfill existing pre-orders by April 30 (next Tuesday), and put a new batch of S4s for sale online come this Saturday, the 27th. As for in-store availability, that’s the trickiest part, so the network is not ready to announce a new ETA at this time. Hopefully, the S4 will come before May 8, right?

But we don’t have only bad news today for people looking to score one of Sammy’s new flagship phones, as US Cellular has surprisingly announced it will start selling the big guy on April 30 in retail locations.

Online, the phone is due to be made available even earlier, on the 26th, though something tells us that’s more wishful thinking on USC’s part than part of a well-thought, cohesive strategy. If US Cellular does manage to pull it off however, it will be interesting to see if it can get some sort of edge on its much bigger competitors.

In terms of pricing, T-Mobile is still reluctant on mentioning specifics, but, based on an official tweet from the carrier, we’re guessing the GS4 will require the coughing up of an upfront $ 150, plus 24 monthly installments of $ 20 each.

That’s for the 16 GB flavor of the phone, naturally, the same that US Cellular will sell in black and white for $ 199.99 with two-year contracts.

So what do you think of all these availability woes? Could they hurt Galaxy S4’s sales numbers or will everyone just be patient and wait for the thing to be properly released? Will you be waiting?

Verizon Galaxy S4 preorders start April 25 [Updated]

SGS4

Device to cost $ 200 with new agreement and $ 50 mail-in rebate; $ 650 off contract

Update: May 30 date has been confirmed on Twitter as well

Verizon will open preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S4 on April 25, according to their official Twitter account. The 16GB version will cost $ 200 with a new contract and a mail-in rebate, or $ 650 for those who are buying outright in order to keep existing unlimited data plans. They haven't said when we should expect to see it on the shelves, which is an important detail. The device will be available in stores on May 30.

We've seen delays from both Sprint and T-Mobile in getting the Galaxy S4 out the door, meanwhile AT&T says they will be shipping devices slightly earlier than expected. The logistics of getting millions of devices from factories in Asia to the hands of consumers surely isn't easy, and maybe Verizon is being smart by keeping any potential dates close to their chest — you can't have a delay on what was never announced.

Anyhoo, if you've been hankering to get Samsung's new Galaxy S4 from Verizon, tomorrow is your chance to get things started.

Leaked Staples doc show Galaxy S4 coming to AT&T April 26, T-Mobile and Verizon later

Galaxy S4

The new 5-inch Galaxy S4 to be tentatively available for AT&T on April 26, T-Mobile on May 1, and Verizon on May 30 says leaked Staples training sheet

So far nobody has given a firm date for the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4, but this document from Staples that was leaked to Engadget may hold the answers. Clearly marked as tentative, the sheet says the S4 will hit AT&T on April 26, T-Mobile on May 1, and Verizon on May 30. There is no mention of the Sprint model, and the leaked materials give no pricing for phones sold at Staples.

The S4 brings a larger 5-inch display to the Galaxy S family, and it comes in slightly smaller that its predecessor. With all new internals and updated software and features, it promises to be more than your new phone — it will be your new "Life Companion"

While we're not so sure we would call a smart phone a life companion, plenty of folks are looking forward to the release of the S4, including all of us here at AC. According to this, we won't have to wait too much longer. With two great new top-tier devices releasing this month on AT&T, it's going to be a tough choice.

Pebble’s Watch-Face SDK Set To Go Out In April

Those creative souls out there can finally get their chance to design watch faces for the Pebble smartwatch for the iPhone and Android with the launching of Pebble SDK next month.

Despite the production delays on the smartwatch (with only 40,000 units manufactured so far), its founder Eric Migicovsky announced in a Kickstarter video update that they will be releasing a software development kit for the Pebble smartwatch in the second week of April.

In the video update, Migicovsky showed some early developer updates about the Pebble smartwatch including a number of watch faces like a dragon imagery, Mario animation and the original Snake game found on Nokia phones.

With a display of only 144×168 pixels, you can expect that the graphics of these watch faces will be very 1980s-like. There will be no high-definition graphics and certainly no 3D interfaces. The Pebble smartwatch is a throwback to over two decades ago.

Limited Features

Regardless, not all the celebrated features of the Pebble smartwatch will be made available in the Pebble SDK. This proof-of-concept SDK will limit the developers’ access to the accelerometer (or magnetometer) and the communication technology between the watch and the smartphone.

This means that although developers are looking for a way to hack into the smartwatch’s system of connecting with your iPhones or Android phones, Pebble’s SDK will limit their access to the unique creation of watch faces. That’s about it.

According to its Kickstarter page, the SDK is a work in progress. It also said that there’s a 99-percent chance that the company will change a lot of APIs. The launch of the SDK is a step the company has to make if it wants to support developers. It will allow developers to learn more about the Pebble smartwatch, as well as help the company keep up with the competition.

The Pebble Fad

Not all is smooth-sailing for the smartwatch, however. Although it recorded quite a high number of pre-orders, having raised more than $ 10 million  for its e-paper, there are still some criticisms if the Pebble Technology is just another fad that will soon be forgotten. Sure, for now it looks cute and it reminds us a lot about our childhood, but how far can the Pebble smartwatch really go? And will its SDK help in making it a necessity rather than an accessory that is not really needed?

As you well know, Pebble can notify you if there’s an email, message or missed call in your iPhone or Android phone. It also has a dependable battery that can last for days. There are numerous competitions in the market, but none has generated enough buzz like the Pebble. It makes you think though if this is something you cannot live without? And if it will still be significant in the years to come?

The Pebble SDK may bring in more creative watch faces and some other tweaks, but I am not sure that is what this smartwatch needs in order to top the competition especially that Apple is now preparing the production of the iWatch in the market.
