Rumors are swirling that Intel Hybrid Cloud (a small business server that ran Linux or Windows) has been discontinued. If true, this is the latest setback for small business customers that want on-premises servers rather than emerging cloud computing alternatives.

As an organization or even individual there always seem to be questions when considering whether or not to make your project or code snippet open source. Many times, it starts with trying to figure out which license to use. But there are many other things to consider. We derived a list for you the next time you ask yourself: Should I open source my code?
At the Open Source Business Conference 2013, conversations on innovation, disruption, and open source leadership dominated the sessions. The conference chair, Matt Assay, crafted a program where each presentation and conversation reinforced how traditional business strategies are being disrupted by new market dynamics. The dynamics are shifting power away from closed, proprietary corporate leadership towards open collaboration and user-led innovation. The shift is disrupting traditional business strategies, IT operation practices, and market dominance.
Brothers Aleksander and Bård Farstad founded eZ Systems with a strong belief in open source in 1999. At that time, there were no scalable open source business models, so they developed and pioneered their own while developing eZ Publish, an Enterprise Content Management System.
Their vision was: an open code-base, high value on customers, and rapid open innovation. And, their core values were: openness, sharing, and innovation.
As a member of the eZ community and the Community Project Board, I can provide insight into how they started and developed their commercial, open source business model.
I vividly remember the time when my early opinions about open source software were built around questions that made natural (and perfect) sense to me at that point in my life, like: “Why would someone sell a software product for free?” and “Why should anyone participate in a project that does not reap financial rewards?” These formed the basis of my rationale.
Until now, business owners utilizing Foursquare have been required to manage their locations via the Foursquare website. Now though, Foursquare for Business has hit the Google Play Store, providing the opportunity to manage those locations on the go.
From within, business owners can post photo updates, share updates via Facebook and Twitter, view recent checkins at their locations, learn more about their customers and drive new business by way of Foursquare specials. It's a very specific app with a specific purpose, but it's great news that Foursquare has realized the power of being able to access your business specific information on the go. It should not surprise you that year after year the most common resolution people make is a combination of lose weight, eat healthier, and get in better shape. This, along with my own resolutions, prompted me to think about what it means to get a company in open source shape.
The top story in business this year on opensource.com was the news that Red Hat reached one billion dollars in annual revenue. This is a major win for the open source software industry and the open source movement. “It is a victory for open source advocates everywhere,” said CEO Jim Whitehurst. “No billion dollar milestone would be complete without honoring the open source community.” And donations were made to several organizations that support the open source movement.

Samsung has just put out a fresh ad for the Galaxy Note 2 targeting enterprise users. In the span of a minute, it does a great job of showing how the Note 2 can be used to take notes, watch video, multitask, and transfer files over NFC. Despite being about work, it still has the same sense of humor as Samsung's previous TV spots, and I'm tempted to agree with the top-voted YouTube commenter for the ad: "Apple is going to have to get more creative with their marketing. Samsung is killing it."
