A new contender enters the fray: First Firefox phone now available

First Firefox phone now available
Apple‘s iOS and Google‘s Android platforms have a stranglehold on the global smartphone market that doesn’t appear to be slipping anytime soon. But as a bloody battle rages for the No.3 and No.4 positions in the smartphone race, a new contender with a very different strategy has now hit the market: Firefox OS. Beginning immediately, the first two Firefox-powered smartphones are available to developers and the general public. Or, they were available — it’s hard to say if consumers at large have had their interest piqued by Firefox OS, but both the Keon ($ 119) and Peak ($ 194) were sold out on Tuesday morning shortly after becoming available so developers are certainly intrigued. We don’t know how many units were stocked with this first round of shipments, but Mozilla’s new open source mobile OS seems to be off to a good start.

Hyundai Enters Android Market With T7 Tablet

Korean car manufacturer Hyundai is entering the Android market with their first tablet called the Hyundai T7. While the company is ranked fifth in the world in terms of car sales their latest offering will be a challenge for them as they enter an already crowded market.

Hyundai-T7

One thing that makes the Hyundai T7 standout is that it is relatively cheap and it comes with fairly impressive specs sporting a quad core processor which is the same one used in the Samsung Galaxy SIII. The device is priced at $ 165.99 which is cheaper than the $ 200 Google Nexus 7 (8GB)  and roughly the same price as the Amazon Kindle Fire 7.

Hyundai T7 Technical Specifications

  • Android 4.0.4
  • 7 Inch IPS LCD 1280 x 800px
  • 5 point multitouch
  • Samsung Exynos 4412, 1.4GHz, Cortex A9 quad core
  • Mali 400 MP4 GPU
  • 1GB DDR 3 RAM
  • 8GB Nand Flash Internal storage
  • Support TF card up to 32GB extended
  • 2 MP rear camera
  • 0.3 MP front camera
  • Gravity Sensor
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • 802.11 b/g/n
  • support external 3G dongle
  • 3300mAh battery ( up to 5 hours work time)

In terms of physical build the tablet is made up of plastic. While this may be good since it keeps the device light you will have to take extra precaution with it since it’s not built to be rugged. The T7 weighs in at 303 grams which is lighter than similar models in the market today.

One thing that disappoints us is its rated 5 hours of work time. This is the company estimate but in real life this may go down to 3 or maybe 4 hours at the maximum.

Aside from these shortcomings it really is an impressive device at its price point. You’ll be getting a device with a quad core processor, dual cameras (front and back), and a good resolution of 1280 x 800.

As to why the car manufacturer is releasing an Android tablet we really don’t know. Should you be getting this device? If you’re looking for a cheap tablet then this makes a perfect choice. We are concerned about the support this device will have from the company though.
