Google’s latest ‘moonshot’ idea: balloon-powered internet for all

Advanced system of high-altitude balloons delivering 3G-like speeds to rural areas

The latest project to come out of Google may seem like an April Fool's joke at first, but Google is serious when it says it intends to launch an internet delivery service based on high-altitude balloons. Known now as "Project Loon" and coming out of the research arm of the company, Google[x], the initiative is taking off (so to speak) out of the need for better internet access in many parts of the world. As it explains in its official blog post about the project, 2 out of every 3 people in the world still don't have reliable access to the internet, leaving many large swaths of the world in the past.

Rather than try to bring traditional wireline or satellite internet into these areas, which can be quite costly, with Project Loon Google plans to set up a system of free-floating high-altitude balloons to create a network with a wider reach. In its preliminary testing Google says it can create networks that have speeds comparable to today's 3G networks — an impressive feat considering these balloons are flying twice as high as commercial airplanes.

Install The Latest VLC In Ubuntu Via PPA [Quick Tip]

Quick tip: new VLC versions are released quite frequently and even though some don’t introduce any new features, there are important bug fixes in each release (you can find the VLC changelogs HERE). If you want to always have the latest stable VLC version in Ubuntu, here are some PPAs you can use.

Ubuntu 13.04: you can install the latest VLC media player (2.0.7 at the time I’m writing this article) by using Nate Muench’s VLC PPA which contains VLC backports from Debian Unstable / Experimental. To add the PPA and install the latest VLC in Ubuntu 13.04, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10: Nate Muench mantains another PPA with the latest VLC media player backported from Debian, for Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04. To add the PPA and install the latest stable VLC, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc2
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

Ubuntu 13.10, 13.04, 12.10 and 12.04: an alternative PPA you can use is the “VLC Daily build of stable branch” PPA. This PPA doesn’t have the latest stable VLC version but it provides builds from the stable branch, so you may occasionaly find some small bugs but if that happens, they should be fixed quickly. The advantage of this PPA over the other two mentioned above is that it has packages for more Ubuntu versions and also, it’s updated more frequently since it doesn’t depend on the packages being available in Debian before uploading them to the PPA. To add this PPA and install the latest VLC in Ubuntu, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

Microsoft’s latest Windows 8 commercial borrows Siri to attack iPad [Video]

Microsoft vs Apple war is on!

In the latest Windows 8 commercial aired by Microsoft, the company uses Siri to attack Apple. The commercial compares iPad and Windows 8 tablet side by side and points out the various drawbacks of the device.

win vs apple

The commercial starts off showing the live tile updates on the windows 8 tablet. Then the ad goes on to boast the various multitasking features on the tablet, which is not present on the iPad. All this while, Siri is narrating the various drawbacks of the iPad in the background.

The commercial continues to criticize Apple iPad for the lack of PowerPoint and ends with Siri saying should we just play chopsticks? The last scene we see is the price comparison of both the devices, in this case the Asus Vivo Smart Tab 64GB priced at $ 449 and the iPad at $ 699.

Clearly, Asus Vivo windows 8 tablet comes out as the winner in the commercial being priced much lesser than the iPad. Even the features shown on the commercial belittles the iPad.

If you look at the theme and the way the ad is presented, you will come to know that it looks a lot like many of the Apple commercials seen lately. Moreover, Microsoft has smartly made the use of the garageband app to play chopsticks which was used in many of the iPad Mini commercials aired last year.

Clearly, this time around Microsoft has done their homework and this might be one of the better ads that we have seen from the company recently.

The war between Apple and Microsoft has been going on for years now and with the huge amount of funding Microsoft is planning to put into these adverts, we are pretty sure that there is more to come.

Rovio teaming up with Dreamworks for latest title, The Croods

Rovio needs no introduction, the developers of the Angry Birds franchise, Amazing Alex and Bad Piggies have hundreds of millions of downloads to their credit around the globe. Breaking away from Angry Birds once more, Rovio has teamed up with Dreamworks to produce the official game of forthcoming movie, The Croods.

Billed as 'the worlds first modern family,' The Croods will hunt and gather their way through the Stone Age catching creatures along the way. Not much in the way of gameplay is shared at this moment in time, although the few screenshots posted on the Rovio website indicate this is nothing like the Angry Birds style of gameplay.

The Croods will be available from the Google Play Store and the Amazon Appstore on March 14, and will be free to download.

LG’s latest Smart TVs to include NFC and Miracast compatibility

Android Central

Not content with waiting until next week to unveil CES bound products, LG has pulled the wraps off some of their latest Smart TV's. We already know that LG is taking some new Google TV hardware to Las Vegas, but these TV sets aren't those. But, despite lacking a direct Android connection, they still give us cause for interest.

Android Central @ CES

The new LG Cinema 3D range includes this rather handsome looking edge-to-edge display, but there's a couple of standout features included. The new TVs will come with NFC compatibility, and Miracast. The sets will come with an NFC sticker that makes it easy to pair with an NFC capable smartphone, allowing for hassle free pairing and streaming of content from your mobile devices.

And that streaming will include the use of Miracast technology. While still in its infancy, it's still great to see LG including the technology in their new TV sets. After all, they did make the Nexus 4.

How to easily install the very latest GNOME in any Distro with JHBuild

The point for having an upstream GNOME installation built from sources is if you are going to build an extension, a theme or a GTK App and take advantage of all the new features of next GNOME. However it is also useful if you want to help GNOME to get better by submitting bugs ..or it could be useful if you are just curious to see what’s coming next :) The tool for building GNOME is nothing else than JHBuild.
