Motorola Obake (AKA Ghost) Spotted Online – Google X Phone or Something Else Entirely?

There’s been a lot of online rumble lately concerning the mythical Motorola X Phone, which may or may not be revealed during Google’s I/O conference next week. But with contradicting rumors coming from right and left, there’s only one thing set in stone – nothing is set in stone.

We’ve seen the thing benchmarked a couple of times under different codenames and with slightly different specs, a dubious set of pics then emerged, as well as a report talking about a Motorola “XFon” for AT&T.

Motorola Obake

Now there’s a new piece of the puzzle ready to be put in place, though where should we put it is beyond me. A credible AnTuTu benchmark of something called “obake_verizon” has been spotted online, partially confirming a codename we first heard of back in March.

“Obake” is Japanese for Ghost, which, according to more than one source, is how a mystery Motorola phone is known internally. The thing is I’m not quite sure this Obake, or Ghost, is the X. Instead, it could simply be a new Moto handheld for the company’s favorite US carrier, Verizon.

If that’s the case, it’s likely not going to be introduced during I/O and will have its biggest selling point in a budget-conscious price point. Chances are it’s going to be the newest member of the Razr family, but that’s just speculation.

The closest things we have to facts regarding the “Obake” are a processor clocked at 1.7 GHz and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the two specs revealed by the leaked AnTuTu benchmark. The CPU is said to be a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro unit, though a 600 is not completely out of the question either.

Of course, if the phone is to pack a Snapdragon 600, its placement in the budget-friendly, mid-range niche is less likely. Hmm, so do we root for something with a great quality-price ratio, or do we want another Samsung Galaxy S4 “killer”?

Naturally, I don’t want to rule out the possibility of this being the X Phone either (or a variation made especially for Verizon), mostly because the benchmark’s score is very close to the ones of the XT1055 and suspicious Android 5.0-based “Google X”. Oh, how you like to torment us, Motorola Google!

Weekend project: Visit the Google Web Lab in London, or online

Android Central

OK, so technically it's more of an outing than a project — in London, at least. It's also not strictly Android, but it's all Google, so it's all good. In the basement level of the London Science Museum, the folks from Mountain View have moved themselves in and built an exhibit they call the Google Web Lab.

A series of interactive exhibits designed to show off the power of the web, and of Google Chrome. Because, at the heart of it all, Google Chrome is controlling the whole show. The best part, is that each and every one of you, the Android Central readers, can play about with all of them without leaving your home. But, if you're in London anytime between now and June, pop by. The Science Museum is free to enter, and has a whole host of other cool, nerdy, non-Google things to look at too. It's the Google bits we're interested in here though, so lets take a look.

Amazon tops as the most convenient online retailer according to survey

amazonAmazon rakes the number one spot in a survey that shows customers’ preference when shopping or buying items online. On the opposite end is JC Penny Co Inc, which has seen a significant drop in customer satisfaction for a major online retailer this Christmas season, according to the survey released on Thursday.

Other online stores suffering from poor customer feedback on the survey are RueLaLa.com and Gilt.com. The survey was conducted by ForeSee’s Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction Index.

Foresee measures customer satisfaction for firms including retailers and online e-commerce sites.

Foresee’s president and chief executive officer Larry Freed said: “The importance of satisfying them and giving a great consumer experience is going to pay back huge dividends in terms of profitability for these retailers.”

Amazon has been a consistent performer in the index for the past eight years because of its user-friendly website and a wide range of merchandise offerings.

“They’ve really done a great job in setting the standard for everybody else,” said Freed, praising Amazon’s effort.

Amazon’s score of 88 out of 100 is the highest, followed by LLBean.com’s 85, which has seen an increase of 4 points from a year ago. Gilt.com and Fingerhut.com are neck to neck at 72, the lowest score.

Freed said that a score of 80 for a site is considered strong.

JC Penny’s score of 83 a year earlier dropped to 78.

“They’ve struggled a lot in their stores as they’ve tried to reinvent themselves a bit and that’s carried over a little bit to the website,” Freed said of JC Penny.

ForeSee’s satisfaction survey also showed scores for other retailers and companies including Apple’s drop from 83 to 80, and Dell’s 77 from 80.

Apple’s popularity brought with it more products, which also makes the site becoming more difficult to navigate, according to Freed. He said that improving the functionality of the site would greatly boost Apple’s satisfaction score.

The biggest retailer in the U.S., Wal-Mart Stores Inc, saw its score drop from 79 to 78, as it strives to boost growth of its online sales. Its competitor, Target Corp scored 79, an increase of 3 points from last year’s 76. Target is struggling to capitalize on its website after it took control over it from Amazon.

Other flash sale sites with lower scores are trying to grow beyond the premise of flash sales, a strategy, Freed noted, that offers a limited amount of discounted prices for items at certain times.

“It works for some kinds of consumers, it’s not going to work for every kind of consumer,” Freed added. “Their models today are going to work and they’re going to have a chance to be successful, but at the end of the day it’s not the right answer for everybody.”

The data of ForeSee was taken from more than 24,000 surveys gathered from users of websites of the top 100 largest online stores, a figure up from 40 retailers during the previous years. The survey was conducted between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Verizon customer database hacked; 300,000 entries leaked online [UPDATE Verizon's response]

Verizon

Update 2: Verizon has responded, and they disagree with many key points in the story here. Following is their full response:

The ZDNet story is inaccurate. This incident was reported to the authorities when we first learned of it months ago and an investigation was launched. Many of the details surrounding this incident are incorrect and exaggerated. No Verizon systems were breached, no root access was gained, and this incident impacted a fraction of the number of individuals being reported.

We take any and all attempts to violate consumer and customer privacy and security very seriously, so we notified individuals who could potentially have been impacted and took immediate steps to safeguard their information and privacy. Verizon has also notified law enforcement of this recent report as a follow-up to the original case.

This sounds pretty positive, and kudos to Verizon for reaching out on the Saturday before Christmas. The original text still follows for reference.

Update: ZD Net has updated their original story, and it appears that the records are for FIOS customers and not wireless customers. We'll leave this in place so that the FIOS customers among you have a heads up

According to ZDNet, a hacker has gained access to over 3 million records from a Verizon Wireless customer database. The information includes names, addresses, serial numbers, and passwords. The hacker gained access to the server on July 12, and claims to have contacted Verizon, but since the have reportedly ignored his report, he has pasted 300,000 of the records online. Supposedly these database is broken up into regions, and the leaked region is in and around Pennsylvania. The records are stored in plain text, and the hacker "might leak the rest later".

If you're a Verizon customer, now would be a good time to change your account password. We're not going to go into the details or link to the pastebin of account data. We hate delivering this sort of news, but we know you need to be informed. We hope Verizon is quick to address the issue, and look forward to hearing their side of things.

NVIDIA Tegra 4 specs leaked online

NVIDIA Tegra 4

A presentation slide has recently been leaked online showing specifications of what is believed to be the next-generation Tegra SoC (system-on-chip) from NVIDIA, otherwise known as NVIDIA Tegra 4. The slide was reportedly first seen in China and that it currently bears a codename “Wayne,” according to a report from Engadget. It wasn’t revealed what kind of occasion Nvidia attended in China that it needed to make a presentation of its next-generation chipset.

If the leaks were accurate, among the information revealed are the following:

  • Nvidia uses 28nm processing process, which brings a lot of improvement when it comes to battery and performance, unlike Tegra 3 that used older 40nm process.
  • Nvidia Tegra 4 will be based on Cortex-A15, otherwise known as 4-PLUS-1 Quad Core Eagle.
  • It is believed to feature a 72-core graphics processor or 6 times the power of Tegra 3.
  • It supports USB 3.0. It conforms with speculations that next-generation tablets will be built with USB 3.0 support.
  • It features resolution as high as 2560 x 1440 pixels and 4K video playback.
  • It supports dual-channel DDR3L memory that may allow up to 2GB RAM.

The rumors about the next-gen Tegra chip started several months ago after many tech enthusiasts found that among all quad-core processors, NVIDIA Tegra 3 was the weakest performer. One of the reasons why is because Nvidia used 40nm manufacturing process but it seems like the company wants to regain its reputation using Tegra 4.

The company is believed to make its announcement during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early January 2013. NVIDIA Tegra 4 will be competing against Samsung’s next-generation Exynos and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon chipset. The year 2013 will surely be filled with more powerful smartphones and tablets with impressive display and more than enough RAM.

Until NVIDIA officially confirmed that there is indeed a Tegra 4 chip being developed, this information should be taken with a grain of salt.
