Your Cloud, Your Data, Your Way! – ownCloud 4.0 On CentOS 6.2 + nginx + PostgreSQL

Your Cloud, Your Data, Your Way! – ownCloud 4.0 On CentOS 6.2 + nginx + PostgreSQL

This document describes how to install and setup ownCloud by “ownCloud
community” on a CentOS 6.2 based webserver from tar package on a nginx
and php-fpm with postgreSQL database as backend. For other distributions
there might be minor changes as to the software prerequisites
installation procedures. This guide will not only help install the
product, but also understand why certain points are done the way they
are done (this is most helpful for users with little or no knowledge
who, like me some time ago, have only started using Linux).

Desktop Syncing Comes To ownCloud Through Mirall And Csync

ownCloud is a free software alternative to some proprietary web services and it currently includes file management (with built-in file sharing), music streaming, calendar, contacts and more – all running on your computer or server.

Desktop file syncing is now possible with ownCloud, through Csync and Mirall:

  • Csync is a command line synchronization tool that comes with an ownCloud module
  • Mirall is a Qt tray sync client that uses Csync and allows you to synchronize data between the local machine and ownCloud
  • Both Csync and Mirall are currently in early beta stages. They can already be used to synchronize your ownCloud, but there are some features that don’t work yet, like installing ownCloud straight from Mirall.

I just installed ownCloud: It’s like my own, wholly controlled version of Google Docs (without the spying) and Dropbox (without the cost)

I didn’t think installing ownCloud would be so easy, but it was. I downloaded the software from ownCloud, uploaded it to the server, created a database, did a quick setup, enabled WebDAV on my local machine to access the files via my native file manager (Nautilus in GNOME in Debian Squeeze, in case you are wondering) and was off to the races.
