Mystery Google media player drops by the FCC

Nexus Q

Could a Nexus Q successor be on the way?

Google's kept pretty quiet about the Nexus Q since removing it from sale last summer. Last we heard, the company was still working on refining its streaming sphere, and that was back in January. In recent days, the lack of Nexus Q support in the new Google Play Music app had led some to believe that Google had abandoned the project. However, freshly-filed FCC documents indicate that Google could be preparing another media player device for release.

The "H840 Device" is revealed in FCC documents to function "as a media player," and was given with the model number H2G2-42, an apparent Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference. As is customary for unreleased products, Google has requested that diagrams and photos of the device remain confidential.

Testing documents reveal that it was tested hooked up to a 24-inch Dell monitor, and that it possesses Wifi a/b/g/n support and a USB port. What's more, it gets its power from a separate power supply unit, so we can safely assume this isn't a smartphone, tablet or wearable device.

Google unveiled the ill-fated Nexus Q at least year's Google I/O conference, where attendees were given complementary spheres. The device went up for pre-order shortly afterwards, but before going on sale Google withdrew the device and shipped Qs out to pre-order customers free of charge. Despite being a no-show at this year's I/O, Google's official stance remains that it's "hard at work" improving the multimedia orb. So could this "H840" device be the result of the past year's efforts? We'll have to wait and see.

Install Pepper Flash Player For Chromium In Ubuntu Via PPA

As you probably know, the latest Adobe Flash Player versions are available on Linux only through Google Chrome, while other browsers are stuck with version 11.2. If you want to use Chromium browser instead of Google Chrome, here’s an easy way to install Pepper Flash Player.

The latest Adobe Flash Player that’s bundled with Google Chrome doesn’t work with browsers like Firefox for instance, because it requires an API called “Pepper” that’s only available in Google Chrome and Chromium. A while back we wrote about using Pepper Flash from Google Chrome in Chromium browser by installing Google Chrome and manually adding the Pepper Flash plugin but here’s an easier way to do it under Ubuntu: by using a PPA.

Pepper Flash Chromium Browser
In case you’re wondering what are the differences between Google Chrome and Chromium (besides the logo), here are a few:
  • Google Chrome is not open source (and thus not available in the official distribution repositories) while Chromium is;
  • Google Chrome is tested by the Chrome developers while Chromium may be modified by distributions; for instance, Chromium in Ubuntu is modified to support the WebApps feature while Google Chrome, being closed source, doesn’t come with these modifications and thus doesn’t support WebApps;
  • Google Chrome comes with optional user metrics;
  • Google Chrome comes with proprietary plugins such as a PDF viewer and Adobe Flash Player (Pepper).

Install Pepper Flash for Chromium in Ubuntu

The Pepper Flash Installer available in the PPA automatically downloads Google Chrome (stable), extracts the Pepper Flash files and installs only those files. Google Chrome itself won’t be installed.
The package is just an installer and doesn’t contain any Google Chrome / Adobe Flash files, like the official flashplugin-installer or out oracle-java-installer.
To add the PPA and install Adobe Pepper Flash from Google Chrome in Ubuntu (to be used in Chromium), use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:skunk/pepper-flash
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pepflashplugin-installer

Once installed, there’s one more step to get Chromium to use the Google Chrome Pepper Flash Player: you need to open /etc/chromium-browser/default as root with a text editor (e.g.: gedit – which I’ll use in the command below):

sudo apt-get install gksu #it`s not installed by default in Ubuntu 13.04
gksu gksu gedit /etc/chromium-browser/default

(“gksu” is used twice to avoid a bug with Gedit opening a blank file next to our file)

and in that file, paste the followng line at the bottom of the file (after the CHROMIUM_FLAGS=”" line):

. /usr/lib/pepflashplugin-installer/pepflashplayer.sh

(yes, there’s a dot in the beginning of the line, then a space!)

Pepper Flash Chromium Browser
That’s it. Now restart Chromium browser, visit chrome://plugins and check the Adobe Flash Player version (it’s possible you have two, there’s no need to disable the old one because Pepper Flash will be used by default since it’s newer) – it shouldn’t be 11.2.x but a newer version (e.g.: 11.7.700.x at the time I’m writing this article).

Arch Linux users can install Pepper Flash for Chromium basically in the same way, by using THIS AUR package.

If you don’t want to use a PPA for this, see: Use Pepper Flash Player From Google Chrome In Chromium Browser.

Poweramp Music Player gets a major widget update

Poweramp

New album art options and additional languages also make it into the latest update

Poweramp is seeing some pretty significant changes in the widget department for version 2.0.9-b528. Homescreen widgets are now fully customizable: the background, text, icons, and buttons can now be completely configured to the user's liking. For anyone that doesn't want to spend the time tweaking every aspect of a widget, up to 15 premade styles are also available to choose from. Existing widgets don't have to be trashed in favor of a fresh one when something needs to be tweaked; tapping the top right of a widget reopens the configuration screen. Phones can now resize widgets that are 4×4 and 2×2, while tablets running Android 3.1+ can change the size of any widget.

Album art gets a 24-bit RGB option, which means higher color resolution (but uses twice the memory). For older Androids, a Notification Album Art option was also added. A new Disable Route Output Button setting and support for Arabic and Vietnamese round out this update.

Follow the Play Store link up top to view and download the latest version of Poweramp Music Player.

Android App Development Tutorial For Beginners – Audio Player Case Study

android-music-player

Android Project — Simple Audio Player Application

After our previous tutorial on running the Android SDK emulator, now we are going to explore Android project, along with two sample media player apps that will make use of Android’s Media Class.  It’s not a problem if you are new to Android but it would be better if you have some previous knowledge  of Java to make things easier.
Opening Eclipse and getting to work.
20th
Since you are opening Eclipse for the first time so you would be having an empty project explorer, but in my case it isn’t.

Now follow the steps to create a new Android project.

  • Click on the File menu and select new Android Application Project.

21th

  • Now go on and give your project a name, here I am naming it AudioPlayer.

22nd
Minimum Required SDK and Target Sdk enables the developer to set his application’s compatibility with Android devices, here my application would be compatible from Android 2.2 (Froyo) to Android 4.1(Jelly Bean).

  • Now you will be asked name your main Activity (Activity is like a page in your application, it contains class and the content view) and main layout (it is where you make your application’s GUI).

23rd

  • Now if you open your project in project explorer you will see project folders such as
    • Src(It contains all the activities).
    • Res(It contains layouts and drawables).
    • Manifest.

    project view

For this project you should be concerned with these only.
