Today I created a short video on Sabayon Linux 10 XFCE. Sabayon comes in many flavours of desktop managers. XFCE is probably one of the lightest, so I decided to look at it. I have to admit, I have always had issues with Gentoo, Sabayon is based on Gentoo and from what I have read helps Noobs like me come to grips with Gentoo. As far as Sabayon’s ‘Out of the Box’ theory it is basically sound as installation, although different from other distributions I have played with was flawless.

Today I created a short video on Sabayon Linux 10 XFCE. Sabayon comes in many flavours of desktop managers. XFCE is probably one of the lightest, so I decided to look at it. I have to admit, I have always had issues with Gentoo, Sabayon is based on Gentoo and from what I have read helps Noobs like me come to grips with Gentoo. As far as Sabayon’s ‘Out of the Box’ theory it is basically sound as installation, although different from other distributions I have played with was flawless.
You can download Sabayon 10 XFCE from the9r web site. One thing I did notice when doing this video review was that Sabayon gave a specific menu area for their web site and support in the application area of the desktop. This is very handy to those that may be new and contains links to various info.

The Sabayon projects supports all the popular and some not-so-popular desktop environments, but only the KDE, GNOME 3 and Xfce editions, besides the Core (SpinBase), ServerBase (Core optimized for servers), and CoreCDX (Fluxbox) editions, were made available for download in this release.
This article is a review of the KDE edition, using a 32-bit ISO installation image. When first booting the system, one of the first things I noticed was that the boot with music option, which was the default, has been removed. Good riddance, I say, because I have always found that to be annoying.

Under the hood, Sabayon 9 has the 3.4 Linux kernel with PAE (Physical Address Extension) to support more than 4 GB of RAM on 32-bit systems. The rolling-release distribution has official flavours for the ‘big three’ desktop environments: GNOME 3.2.3, KDE 4.8.3 and Xfce 4.10.
