Despite 100 million licenses sold, Windows 8 install base estimated at 59 million

Windows 8 Installation Base Estimate
Although Microsoft recently touted having sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses this week, careful observers noted that selling all those licenses doesn’t mean vendors have actually sold 100 million Windows 8 devices over the past half-year. ComputerWorld this week talked with Patrick Moorhead, a principal analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, who estimates that the actual number of Windows 8 devices being used out in the wild is closer to 59 million, since the most recent data from Net Applications shows that Windows 8 is being used on around 4.2% of all Windows PCs.

LG: 10 million LTE smartphones sold worldwide so far

Android Central

LG's latest sales announcement may still seem somewhat insignificant in the overall standings, but that's not to say it's an achievement that should be sneered at. Announced this morning, LG has now sold 10 million 4G LTE smartphones worldwide. There's a strong chance that the bulk of those sales were made in its native South Korea, but 10 million is 10 million, wherever they're sold.

Consider too the global mess that is LTE, and the fact that outside the United States and places like Korea, it's still starting out in many areas. Europe is still getting to grips with LTE, the UK has barely started for example, and making a device LTE compatible in different markets is still more of a headache than it should be in an ideal world.

LG is committed to the 4G LTE device market, and with the introduction of the F-Series at Mobile World Congress, hopes to bring affordable LTE devices to the market.

Apple has now sold over 25 billion songs over iTunes

Apple iTunes 25 Billion Songs
Yes, it seems that Steve Jobs knew what he was doing when he decided to launch the iTunes store all those years ago. Apple (AAPL) announced on Wednesday that it has now sold more than 25 billion songs over iTunes, an astonishing figure for the online store that has changed how people buy and listen to music. For the record, the 25 billionth song downloaded was something called “Monkey Drums” (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase Buch, which was downloaded by a German man named Phillip Lüpke. To celebrate his remarkable achievement of downloading a song, Apple is giving Lüpke an iTunes gift card worth  €10,000.

Nexus 7 docking station seemingly sold out at ASUS UK

Android Central

Last night we reported that the official ASUS-made Nexus 7 docking station had started appearing at the manufacturer's own UK-based online store — well, for some users, at least. This morning there's good news and bad news.

Firstly, it seems the product page is now working for more people — we're having no problem accessing it here in the UK. However, the accessory now shows as "sold out," as opposed to shipping with a two-week lead time, as was the case yesterday evening. It appears a few eager Nexus 7 owners may have snapped up ASUS' initial batch of tablet docks in just a few short hours.

So, sad pandas for anyone in the UK hoping to pick up this coveted accessory direct from the manufacturer. However at least there's hope that other retailers may step in with their own supplies in the days ahead, now that these things are out in the wild. We'll keep you posted.
