Verizon Motorola Droid Razr errors, problems, solutions and workarounds

This post tackles on the most pressing problems Verizon customers have experienced with their Motorola Droid Razr device. It seeks to provide solutions and workarounds rather than complain or criticize the carrier for the problems its customers are experiencing. If you are one of the people who are facing any of the problems mentioned here, then you’re lucky. Otherwise, feel free to send us questions via the email address we provided at the end of this post.

Droid-Razr

Verizon Motorola Droid Razr Mobile Hotspot Problem

One of the most pressing problems Verizon customers are experiencing right now is the inconsistency of the mobile hotspot service in Droid Razr HD. Many are complaining they have every setting correct in their device but tethering is just not possible. The worst thing is, there was no explanation as to why this problem happened so they were left hanging and guessing what to do. This is what happens according to customers:

  1. Provisioning Server message pops up.
  2. The message Turning Mobile Hotspot On shows up.
  3. A couple of seconds later, the message Turning Off Mobile Hotspot follows.

In its support forum, some representatives suggested steps to resolve this issue. If you are one of the customers who might have been experiencing this problem, you might want to try the instructions below and see if you can bring mobile hotspot to work again.

Step 1: Go to Tethering and Mobile Hotspot settings.

Step 2: Tap on Mobile Hotspot settings.

Step 3: Choose Manage Devices.

Step 4: Now manage all devices sharing the internet connection from your phone; make sure all devices are allowed.

While many customers reported doing the steps above hasn’t resolved their issue, it is still worth a try. After all, that’s the basic thing to do to resolve minor tethering problems. Moreover, let’s wait for the next update Verizon will roll out for this device because it is pretty obvious it is a software-related problem. Owners who have tried installing custom ROMs into their Motorola Droid Razr who are also subscribed to mobile hotspot plan by Verizon are said not having to experience this problem.

Verizon Motorola Droid Razr Media Playback Muted

This may not be a known issue for Motorola Droid Razr phone under Verizon network, but many have actually experienced it. There are no errors, it’s just that the phone behaves in an unusual way sometimes where volumes are messed up. Reports indicate that when playing videos both local and online, users can’t hear audio.

What owners can do is to set volume levels and that would solve the problem.

  1. Call on System Settings and scroll down a bit.
  2. Tap on Sound option.
  3. Choose Volumes.
  4. Toggle volume levers and set intensities you prefer.

The next time you watch your favorite video, you don’t have to set the volumes again.

Verizon Motorola Droid Razr Won’t Turn On

Many Verizon customers reported their Droid Razr died on them for no apparent reason. The thing is, no one can explain why a problem like this happens and what could have triggered it. So, we really have no clue what to do to make the device come back life and be useful again except for one. Here’s how…

  1. To make sure the device has enough power to start, it is strongly advised to plug the phone to a power source (you need to use its charger, of course) and leave it for an hour.
  2. Force reboot the device by pressing and holding the Power and Volume Down buttons for 10 to 15 seconds. Don’t worry, it’s just a reboot and you data will never be compromised.
  3. After doing step 2 and the phone won’t turn back on, try taking off the battery. Yes, yes, it’s not the easiest thing to do but you actually don’t have a choice but to do it. This step has been advised by an XDA developer who said to have experienced this problem before and after he reflashed the stock ROM. For Droid phones, taking off the battery often resolves many problems, he said. So, it’s worth the try.
  4. After you’ve taken the battery out, leave the device without it for a minute. Then, re-insert the battery and repeat step 2.
  5. If you’ve done all these and still the device won’t turn on, call Verizon and try reps’ suggestions.

Verizon Motorola Droid Razr Email Not Refreshing

Another thing Verizon customers have been complaining about is the problem that includes their email not refreshing in their devices. We may have the tendency to immediately blame Verizon for it but the fact it, it is not actually a Verizon-specific problem. It happens to many Android users every day and the good news is, it is easier to fix than you think.

To fix this problem, users need to clear all data in the Email app and force close it. So, it is advisable you have a backup of all your emails so you can sync them back when everything works fine.

  1. Call on system Settings app.
  2. Browse through the list of options and find Applications.
  3. Tap on All tab and scroll down a little to find Email app. Tap on it.
  4. Now tap on that Clear Data button you find, then the Force Close button.
  5. Launch Email app from the Home screen and setup your email again.

This problem often occurs to people using Yahoo! Mail and AOL.

Verizon Motorola Droid Razr Can’t Transfer Picture To SD Card

The reality with this phone is that before the Jelly Bean update, it was easier to transfer files from the phone’s internal memory to the SD card. So now, people who were used to using Ice Cream Sandwich have a hard time locating functions they often use before and one of those is the option to transfer pictures and media files to an external storage device.

  1. Tap on Menu button from the Home screen.
  2. Choose the icon/button that says Files, then select Device storage.
  3. Locate your pictures and choose the ones you want transferred. Hold your selection until they are highlighted.
  4. At the bottom, you will find a console with buttons/icons on it. Choose the icon with a box and an arrow pointing right. You will see a flashing message that says Locate A Destination.
  5. Now choose 1 Selected option then pick SD Card.

That’s the most difficult way to transfer pictures. The easiest way is to plug your phone to a computer and simply move your pictures from the internal memory to the SD Card.

For people who might be wondering how to easily export photos to their computer, the easiest way to do it is sync the phone with a Google Plus account or in Picasa. Photos can then be downloaded anytime, anywhere.

HTC One X errors, problems, solutions and workarounds

HTC One X is the company’s flagship for 2012. While it is a very powerful phone from the Taiwanese manufacturer, it is not perfect and some One X errors show from time to time. We have looked into some most common issues reported by users and found solutions for them. Here is a short list of those problems; see if you have experienced one of these:

one-x-errors

HTC One X com.android.phone Error

Problem: Someone called me on my HTC One X and I was about to answer the call when an error like com.android.phone stopped working. My phone froze and I had no other option but to reboot it. It happened several times already and it is very annoying because it happens every time someone calls me or I am the one making the call. What can I do? Please help because I’m not really tech-savvy.

Answer: This was a known issue for HTC One X during its Ice Cream Sandwich days. Users who have reportedly experienced this problem said this error often occurs when importing contacts, making outgoing calls and receiving incoming calls. Logically, the Phone app in your device freezes when this error shows up because com.android.phone is a system function. When it fails, you couldn’t use the Phone app anymore and the entire system will be affected. To fix this, owners are advised to clear data of the dialer: Settings => Application Manager => Dialer => Clear Data => Force Stop => Reboot phone.

HTC One X No SIM Card error

Problem: My SIM card works with other phones and I know I have inserted it properly in the tray but my One X still says there’s no SIM card. Please help, I don’t know what to do.

Answer: Okay, so the “defective SIM card” possibility is out of question here because you said it’s working with your other phones. There’s this one little magic that might just resolve this problem: insert a sheet of paper between the tray and the SIM so it would be pushed down to touch the phone’s SIM card interface. This kind of error is often caused by loose connection so a piece of paper might just the answer.

HTC One X Camera Update error

Problem: A notification popped up telling me an update is now available for my camera app. I finished the download but there is an error during an installation that causes the phone to abort. Is there a fix to this?

Answer: In an informal survey, it shows that more people experience not having been able to install updates than apps. So, the best solution for this problem is to uninstall your camera app first, download the new updated version and install it. Not only will this solve the error, you also have a fresh installation of the camera app.

HTC One X Error 120

Problem: I’m trying to update my HTC One X phone when Error 120 showed up saying I don’t have enough  battery left. Do you think it’s really the battery that’s causing this problem?

Answer: Yes, the battery has something to do with this error message but it’s not really that accurate. The device will tell you you’re below 30% but in truth you still have enough. Luckily, this is a known issue and guys from HTC have recommended users needed to turn their device off, charge the battery all the way until it’s full and let it sit for a few minutes after charging before turning on the phone.

HTC One X Reconnect Phone Error 1016

Problem: I tried syncing my contacts in my One X but I was stopped by Reconnect Phone Error 1016. Does anybody here explain what this issue really is?

Answer: This is more of a USB driver than anything else. Apparently, it error 1016 speaks of connection problem and it comes from HTC Sync. The only possible way to resolve this issue is to uninstall HTC Sync from your computer together with all the drivers. Reboot your computer and re-install HTC Sync, then connect your phone with your computer and let the machine detect your phone on its own.

HTC One X Email Issues

Problem: It takes forever for my HTC One X to refresh the list of my emails. How to resolve this?

Answer: First, check if your internet connection is good, it might be the one causing the problem. Try clearing the data of the Email app by going to Settings, then Applications. You will be asked to enter your credentials once you login again. If it still doesn’t work, try to use other email apps. Remember, factory reset is not always the solution to simple glitches like this. In the end, it might be an OS-related issue and can be fixed once you update your device.

We are open to questions and suggestions. If you have concerns and problems with your HTC One X, feel free to shoot us emails at mailbag@thedroidguy.com. Moreover, users who may have other workarounds for issues mentioned in this post, you can send them over via the same address.

Samsung Galaxy S3 problems, questions and solutions – Part 3

We never thought that our articles about Samsung Galaxy S3 errors and solutions published a couple of days ago will keep us busy answering some of our readers’ questions. This is the third article dealing with most common problems Galaxy S3 owners have encountered. Follow links below for the first two parts:

  1. Samsung Galaxy S3 Errors you may encounter; solutions and workarounds provided — Part 1
  2. Samsung Galaxy S3 problems, solutions and workarounds – Part 2

galaxy-s3-brown

Galaxy S3 Proximity Sensor Error/Glitch

Reader’s Problem: Hello I’m having a problem with my Samsung Galaxy s3 with phone calls, it’s when some one rings me or sometimes happens when I call them that I can’t hang up calls when I’m finished my call, screen just goes back, can’t touch to relight up screen and no buttons will work anywhere on phone. When other end is hung up around 5 seconds delay, then phone lights back up and is normal again. Probably sounds silly but hope you can help. Cheers, Ben.

Explanation: Proximity sensors were added to smartphones to make them even smarter. In Samsung Galaxy S3′s case, this sensor comes into play during calls. If the device detects it is near the owner’s face, the display automatically shuts off while keeping the call active. There were a few reported cases of proximity sensor glitches in S3 and they happened during Ice Cream Sandwich days. While it is a simple glitch, it is annoying because owners would have to wait a few seconds before the phone becomes active again.

Solution:  Since it is a software-related problem, an update would fix this issue. Owners are advised to go to Settings => About phone => Software updates. The phone will then scan for updates and if there is one, owners can initiate without having much of a problem.

Workaround: Just in case an update is not available and owners cannot stand experiencing this glitch, they are advised to turn the proximity sensor off.

How to disable Proximity Sensor in Galaxy S3

Step 1: Tap on Phone icon to launch the Phone app.

Step 2: Tap on Menu key, left of the Home button.

Step 3: Choose Call settings option.

Step 4: Uncheck Auto screen off during calls option.

This is the most common workaround to keep the phone’s screen active during calls.

Set Specific Music Folder in Galaxy S3

Reader’s Problem: I read your help on problems with Galaxy S3 music player but I have another problem. When I play my music on shuffle the phone includes all sound recordings, not just the ones in music player. As I have a Birds of Britain app on my phone with 286 bird song recordings on it listening to music is hilariously interspersed with quacks,  tweets, whistles and warbles. Any thoughts? Thanks, Anna.

Explanation: Android’s stock music player detects all audio formats and adds them to the playlist. While applications’ data are saved in a specific directory unreachable by the music app, problems like this happen when owners make a backup or their apps. All data will be archived in the SD card without being compressed. Thus, the music app can now detect the audio files of the apps and add them automatically to the playlist.

Workaround: I, too, am waiting for the day that the Android stock music app can choose a specific music folder and not scan the device’s entire internal memory or SD card to find audio files. The most common workaround is to delete unwanted audio files from the playlist. But my advice is to use a third-party music app. For this problem, I highly recommend Mixzing application. It is a free app from the Play Store and users can specify which folder the app needs to scan for audio files.

Install Adobe Flash Player in Galaxy S3

Reader’s Problem: I have tried everything that I’ve been advised and nothing works. I had flash before, my husband also has it on his S3, but after Verizon did a hard reset, I lost it. And now unable to find a good link to install it back onto my phone. Could you please help?

Explanation: It was in August last year that Adobe announced it would stop support for its Flash Player on Android. Consequently, manufacturers and carriers released updates that took away the support for the flash player. So, basically, this is a global problem. Good thing we the XDA Developers who always have solutions for problems like this.

Solution: You can either install apps from the Play Store that claim to support flash or you can follow the guide our friends at XDA Dev forums offer.

Unbrick Samsung Galaxy S3

Reader’s Problem: One of our readers said the electricity was cut off (consequently his internet was cut off, too) while he was updating his device. So, his phone was bricked.

Explanation: It is not a rare case. In fact, many people have experienced this problem. The thing is, when the update process is interrupted and was completed, some system files are missing in the phone so the operating system couldn’t load completely. Fortunately, it is easy to unbrick Galaxy S3.

Solution: Owners need to flash the official firmware using the Odin tool. Just follow the steps below.

Step 1: Download Odin and launch it as Administrator.

Step 2: Download official Galaxy S3 firmware. If you’re in the U.S. and is under a network, choose one from these firmware packages: T-Mobile | AT&T | Sprint. You need to extract contents of these packages.

Step 3: Turn your Galaxy S3 off and boot it into the Download Mode: press and hold HOME and VOLUME DOWN buttons while tapping the POWER button.

Step 4: Connect your device to your computer. If the connection is good, one of the ID:COM boxes turns yellow. Otherwise, make sure all drivers are installed and repeat this step.

Step 5: Under the Option section in Odin UI, check Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time.

Step 6: Click on PDA button and browse through the directory you extracted contents of the official firmware and look for “.tar” file.

Step 7: Click on START button to begin flashing of the official firmware.

Step 9: Wait until your phone is automatically rebooted before you use it.

Galaxy S3 Shuts Off Occasionally

Reader’s Problem: Wife and I both have the galaxy s3 running verison 4.1.1, from time to time it will just shut down and kick off have to take the battery out to reboot.

Explanation: There could be plenty of reasons why Galaxy S3 behaves this way. Others complain their phone reboots by itself from time to time.

Solution: The first solution we can recommend on this problem is try to reset the device into factory settings. It may be a hassle to back up all your data but it’s worth a try. If it doesn’t work, try to check if there is an available software update. More often, updates bring a lot of bug fixes. Lastly, contact your provider and have your unit be replaced with a new one.

Protect choice and freedom in technology by choosing open source solutions

open innovation

I remember first meeting Jeffrey A. “Jam” McGuire in person at DrupalCon Denver. We talked about communities, music, and shared ways to show why open source is a better way. Even before meeting him, I could tell from my first interaction with him that he was passionate about Drupal and open source. He’s becoming an in-demand Keynote speaker and presenter at Drupal and other business and software events around the world. He’s already a staple for the Intro to DrupalCon session and always seems to incorporate music and singing as part of the performance.
