BitTorrent Sync: Secure File Sync Between Computers Using P2P Technology [Public Alpha]

BitTorrent Sync, a free to use (but not open source) tool that can be used to automatically synchronize files between computers using the BitTorrent protocol, is now available for all as public alpha. The application runs on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and NAS.

BitTorrent Sync Web Interface Linux

The tool, which has been in closed alpha for the past four months, is advertised as “a simple tool that applies p2p protocol for direct live folder sync with maximum security, network speed and storage capacity“.

And indeed, BitTorrent Sync is a great way of syncing and sharing files between computers, even files that you usually wouldn’t trust with cloud sync tools such as Dropbox: besides the files being transferred directly between the users (so your files don’t end up on some cloud server), the connection is encrypted with a AES cypher and a 256-bit key created on the base of your Secret, a random 20 byte or more string. For increased security, there’s also an option to generate a Secret that expires after a day.

Basically, this peer-to-peer (p2p) sync tool can be compared with cloud sync services such as Dropbox or Ubuntu One, but no server is involved which also means that the sync can be faster than such services and there are no space restrictions (except your HDD). This also means the computers need to be online for the sync to work, obviously.

How to use BitTorrent Sync on Linux

Arch Linux users can install BitTorrent Sync via AUR.

To use BitTorrent Sync (or “BtSync”) on Linux, download and extract the binary for your architecture (Ubuntu users: use the “Linux i386″ or “Linux x64″ links on the left; don’t download the “glib 2.3″ binaries), extract it and to run it, simply type the following in a terminal (assuming you’ve extracted the “btsync” binary in your home folder):

cd
./btsync

To see a list of available options, type:

./btsync --help

And if you want to stop BitTorrent Sync, use:

killall btsync

BitTorrent Sync doesn’t come with a GUI for Linux, but it can be configured through a web interface so once you’ve started BtSync like we’ve explained above, open a web browser and enter the following URL: http://localhost:8888/gui/

Now let’s add a folder to sync. To do this, click “Add folder”, then browse for a folder you want to sync and also click “Generate” to generate a Secret for this folder. Then click “Add” to add the folder:

BitTorrent Sync Web Interface Linux
If you want to connect to other devices / synchronize a folder from a remote computer on your machine, follow the same steps as above, but instead of clicking “Generate” for the Secret, paste the Secret generated for the folder from the remote computer.

On Linux, most of the settings aren’t available in the web interface. Instead, you can run:

./btsync --dump-sample-config > sync.conf

Which will create a new “sync.conf” file with a sample configuration file. Modify the settings in this file to suit your needs and then run BtSync using the following command (which will make BtSync use the newly created configuration file):
./btsync --config sync.conf

For more on how to use BitTorrent Sync on Linux but also on Windows and Mac OS X, see the User Guide PDF file.

Download BitTorrent Sync for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and NAS.

New Galaxy S4 may come with eye-tracking technology

galaxy-siv-artistThe next installment of South Korean Samsung Galaxy flagship phone may feature an eye-tracking technology, reports say. The coming Galaxy S4, to be announced in New York in March 14 and will be released afterwards, will be equipped with hardware and software capable of offering eye-tracking technology. A New York Times report cited a Samsung employee who revealed that the new phone will use a technology that will allow for automatic scrolling and page turning when a user’s eyes reach the bottom of the screen. There was also a presumption that the same technology will even allow for eye-controlled video games.

According to unnamed sources of the New York Times, the next generation Galaxy S4 will have feature significant software rather than hardware upgrades.  The said sources claimed to have seen and tested the new phone. The eye-tracking technology eliminates the need for physical input devices when browsing or scrolling.

Following the report of the leak, The New York Times interviewed Samsung’s chief product officer Kevin Packingham. He refused to give more information about the new product although he indicated that there will also be more hardware improvements.

The rumored eye-tracking technology is consistent with Samsung’s recent  filing of patents in Europe for similar technology called “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause”. According to Samsung, “Eye Scroll” is a “computer application software having a feature of sensing eye movements and scrolling displays of mobile devices, namely, mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers according to eye movements; digital cameras; mobile telephones; smartphones; tablet computers.” It is presumed that this technology will have the needed resolution to detect a user’s eyes moving up and down. There are speculations on how much battery life and CPU time the new technology will consume, though it will be safe to assume it will not be cheap.

The current Galaxy S3 already features a similar technology called “Smart Stay”. Using the front-facing camera, the Galaxy S3 scans a user’s face to see if a user is looking at it, preventing the phone from going to sleep mode. The rumored eye-tracking technology for the S4, if true, will absolutely be more advanced than Galaxy S3′s Smart Stay in the sense that the latter was only using the front-facing camera for mere face detection. The new S4 technology is supposed to do more than that as it will feature real eye tracking that can sense where  the eye is looking.

There are questions how this novel eye-tracking technology will be implemented though. The current crop of eye-tracking devices tend to require some kind of a headset and a camera  close to the eye. The smallest eye-tracking hardware that can be added to laptops are being manufactured by Tobii are still too big a hardware to be implemented into a smartphone.

Some people believe that the feature may not also have an ultra-high resolution eye-tracking…yet.

Samsung’s Galaxy S3 tallied a whooping 18 million units sold worldwide from July to September, beating Apple’s vaunted iPhone4S during the same quarter. Apple took the lead again during the last quarter by selling about 27 million iPhone 5s, though the Galaxy S3 still shipped out about 15 million units.

The new Galaxy S4 comes with a 1080p screen, 2 GB RAM, and 1.8 GHz Exynos 5 Octa CPU–almost like everything the current market is offering. It is expected to be a hit this year despite stiff competition from Apple, HTC, and Sony.

Memo to Linux Devs: Focus on Design, Not Technology

In the open source channel, many developers could stand to focus a bit less on technology itself, and a bit more on making products look and feel smart, intuitive and elegant–especially when it comes to communicating with end users. Most Linux distributions don’t get this right, but Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, shines as an outlier. Here’s how.

Leap Motion gets $30 million funding for new motion sensor controller technology

The technology you probably have seen in Steven Speilberg’s 2002 movie Minority Report has been fully realized by Leap Motion’s hand-motion controller. The San Francisco-based startup company recently received $ 30 million funding for the technology and has partnered with Taiwanese manufacturer Asustek Computer in an agreement that computers bundled with motion sensors would be released later this year. The first batch of controllers, however, will start selling by March.

This isn’t the first time people have seen motion sensors come into play because apparently, such technology has long been used in Microsoft’s Kinect. Leap Motion, however, said its product is not as big (in size) as existing motion sensors in the market today. It comes with two small sensitive cameras enclosed in casing not more than the size of a cigarette lighter, which would be set atop a computer desk.

The sensors are sensitive enough to detect 10 fingers and filter motions created by each one of them to the hundredth of a millimeter. The controller will be marketed with $ 70 price tag.

Leap Motion’s controller has lured many investors including Highland Capital Partners and Founders Fund aside from the already mentioned Asustek Computer. The idea of controlling a computer with hands started long ago and people were mesmerized by it even more when Steven Speilberg illustrated it almost realistically through its movie starred by Tom Cruise. The evolution of computer and mobile technologies paved a way for three-dimensional controls and the company is honest enough to acknowledge that.

With Asustek Computer agreeing with Leap Motion to bundle the controllers with some of its computers, the next thing we may be seeing are laptops with built-in motion sensors instead of mere cameras. The fact that the company is open to the idea to license its technologies is the key to have this sensor be put on other devices other than computers. One of the possibilities is that Smart TV manufacturers like Samsung and LG might use Leap Motion’s technology to make things even better in their products.

Leap Motion is still in the process of marketing its controllers as well as attracting even more developers to build more apps for it. Chief Executive Officer Michael Buckwald also shared about the company’s desire to invade tablet and car markets with its technology.

Protect choice and freedom in technology by choosing open source solutions

open innovation

I remember first meeting Jeffrey A. “Jam” McGuire in person at DrupalCon Denver. We talked about communities, music, and shared ways to show why open source is a better way. Even before meeting him, I could tell from my first interaction with him that he was passionate about Drupal and open source. He’s becoming an in-demand Keynote speaker and presenter at Drupal and other business and software events around the world. He’s already a staple for the Intro to DrupalCon session and always seems to incorporate music and singing as part of the performance.
