NVIDIA, Valve Share Lessons In Porting To Linux
Last month at the Game Developers’ Conference (GDC), NVIDIA and Valve shared their experiences and pitfalls in porting the Source Engine to Linux. While talking about Valve’s experiences, many of the information can apply to any game developer (or Direct3D/OpenGL application) wishing to come to Linux…

Valve Sued In Germany Over Right To Resell Games
This obviously isn’t a new question for us here at Techdirt. It’s been a point of logical frustration for consumers that content producers often seem to want their output treated like property when it suits them, but as a service or license when it does not. This leads to, at the very least, the appearance of double-dipping on the part of content producers. For gamers, where used games are such an intregal part of the marketplace, the frustration often boils over. In my estimation, it’s quite difficult to draw up a logical proof for limiting the rights to a product for the consumer while strengthening the rights for the producer. Such an arrangement is simply too one-sided in who is giving up whose rights.

Valve Greenlights a New Batch Of Games
A fourth batch of games has been lit by Valve on their ever growing Steam Greenlight service. There are some really outstanding games this time around too. La-Mulana has been approved and so hasĀ Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, which are both shaping up to be great games!
La-Maluna is a brilliant 2D exploration game and is a cross between Dark Souls and the controversial Fez while taking on the style of Indiana Jones. While it’s making it’s way to Steam, the game made it’s way to WiiWare back in September of 2012. Oh and when I say it’s a cross between Dark Souls and Fez, this game by no means has the outstanding graphics of Dark Souls or the peaceful graphics of Fez. It’s very unique in its own way. It shouldn’t be long now before we see the full release on Steam, as the developers were originally hoping to get it on there during Q4 of 2012. I imagine since that did not happen that they may be trying to get it on there as fast as possible.
The full list of titles greenlit can be found below.
- Akaneiro: Demon Hunters
- Asylum
- DLC Quest
- Eador. Masters of the Broken World
- La-Mulana
- Leisure Suit Larry
- MaK
- The Age of Decadence
- Unepic
- War For The Overworld
IGF Finalists:
- Kentucky Route Zero
- Incredipede
Non-game software:
- articy:draft | Game Design Tool
- GroBoto — Modeling App
While it’s great that all of these titles have been greenlit, I’m honestly hoping that Valve will be a bit quicker. There are some really outstanding titles on Steam Greenlight that a lot of users are dying to get their hands on, but can’t because something else takes precedence. Hopefully Valve will pick up the pace a bit when it comes to greenlighting games.

Up to this point there’s been mixed results when running Steam and the Source Engine games on other distributions due to packaging problems, graphics/driver issues, and other bugs.
