The latest release of Zenwalk Linux, version 7.2, is now available and focuses on further improving the Slackware-based distribution’s overall performance, as well as updating its underlying components. Project founder Jean-Philippe Guillemin says that the goal of the new version was to “achieve 100% Slackware Linux compatibility,” while also keeping and improving upon most of the optimisations throughout all levels of the OS, including the kernel, applications and desktop.

The Zenwalk desktop is based on the Xfce 4.10, GTK+ 2.24.10 and 3.4.4, with unique look and feel and perfect ergonomic integration of the application set – LibreOffice 3.6.2, Firefox and Thunderbird 15.0.1, GIMP 2.8.2 and much more. The Netpkg package manager has been improved with multiple mirrors support and better performance.

Zenwalk is a France-based distribution originally based on Slackware. It first appeared in 2004 under the name “Minislack”, and changed to the current name in 2005. The current stable version, 6.2, was released in September 2009. At Christmas 2009, Zenwalk was the 19th most popular distro tracked by distrowatch.com, with an average of 375 page views per day.

Zenwalk Linux is probably one of the most if not the most popular Slackware-based Linux distribution today. It is ranked consistently high on Distrowatch and has a good number of active users and community members. The popularity is mainly due to Zenwalk’s simplicity, ease-of-use, and Slackware-like stability. I can undoubtedly prove this as I have been a Zenwalker before.
