Ubuntu Unleashed 2012 Edition: Covering 11.10 and 12.04 (7th Edition) (7th Edition),
Ubuntu Unleashed 2012 Edition: Covering 11.10 and 12.04 (7th Edition) (7th Edition)As a new Ubuntu user the book helped me learn the basics of the operating system.I believe the author did a very good job in explaining things in detail. I rather enjoyed Chapter 3, working with Unity, and it’s material on the X Window System. Very up to date (at time of printing) and articulate! I wished the book would of explained more on how you import programs and get them to work with in the Ubuntu shell One nice thing is if you register your book you will receive a CD with the newest version of Ubuntu when it becomes available for free.

|Overview but not how to operate ubuntu,
Was basically hoping for a how to manual going into the details of configuring Ubuntu, Samba etc that I could keep near my machine and use as a ready reference.
This is more an overview of what Ubuntu is capable of and what addons or programs may be worth looking at for various purposes but does not go into any detail on the “how”. basically wets the appetite and teases but does not tell me how to do things.

|Excellent Ubuntu coverage,
This book covers all the bases. As an overall reference for features in the 11 different flavors of Ubuntu, it provides you with the background to become more proficient in using the graphical and command line interfaces available to do everything that a modern Linux system should provide. From my experiences using the book so far, I’ve converted from old-school Unix to new-school Linux/Unix.
From personal experience, I fully realize that it is difficult to provide an all-encompassing reference for anything as complex as an operating system, but in retrospect, I think the author has done a great job in explaining things in detail. I particularly liked Chapter 3, working with Unity, and it’s material on the X Window System. Very up to date and articulate!
There is a section on setting up Ubuntu 11.10 as a server, but it is not talking about the Server Edition.
Unfortunately, the only 11.10 Server edition book I can find, the Richard Petersen book, is woefully inadequate. The only real help that the Petersen book gave me was with installing the LightDM desktop. See my review of that book for details.
This book though covers it all in a contemporary and complete way.
